Cardinals begin season 4-1 By BARRY BURLESON Editor The Potts Camp Cardinals are off to a strong start on the baseball diamond. The Cardinals are 4-1 in non-district action. They opened Region 2-2A play Tuesday of this week at Walnut. “I’m
very excited about the way we are looking this year,” coach Justin
Weeden said. “We have some really good pitching with Jesse (Shaw) and
Ben (Bolden) and our bats are starting to come alive. “We
also have great senior leadership this year with Kody (Joyner) behind
the plate and Zack (Mayer) being our go-to utility player. Zack can
play anywhere we put him.” Potts Camp opened its season with a 9-7 win over Marshall County rival Byhalia. Shaw was the winning pitcher with 10 strikeouts. Hunter Joyner and Bolden had multiple hits. The Cardinals then knocked off West Union 4-2. Bolden earned the victory from the mound. He struck out eight. Bolden also had multiple hits on offense. Potts Camp improved to 3-0 with a 9-5 win over Pine Grove. Kody Joyner connected for two doubles. Shaw also had multiple hits and was the winning pitcher. The Cardinals’ only loss in the first two weeks of the season was an 8-2 decision versus Ingomar. Bolden was the losing pitcher. Shaw threw in relief and struck out eight. Mayer had two hits for Potts Camp. The Cards then went to spring break on a winning note when they turned back West Union 11-10. The
offense exploded – led by Shaw’s four hits. Bolden and Nick Watts added
three hits each. One of Bolden’s was a home run. Kody Joyner and Mayer
had two hits each. Shaw and Bolden pitched for Potts Camp. Bolden recorded 10 strikeouts. The
Cardinals host Bruce this Friday at 5 p.m. Next Tuesday, March 27, they
play Calhoun City at 5 p.m. at home. Junior varsity games will follow
both varsity contests. Bruce and Calhoun City are district foes.
