Thieves hit churches

Four church burglaries within about a 15-mile radius of each other in the last two weeks have law enforcement seeking tips that will develop suspects.

Sheriff Kenny Dickerson set up a news conference at Apostolic Lighthouse Church Tuesday morning after the pastor reported a day earlier that the church was robbed.

New culverts

Bain & Sons Inc. is removing worn-out culverts on South Center Street. They will be replaced with 88-inch arched concrete pipe (top). Walter Bain (above), operating the track hoe, said the old metal pipe had rusted below and the surface of the road had been sinking in as the culvert gave way. The existing metal pipes are about 30 years old but the new concrete pipe should last 80 years or more, he said. South Center will be blocked in the area until the work is completed.

City to extend gas main

There will be a lot of construction work going on soon from Highway 178 East to the 78 bypass when a large natural gas line is extended to the Rogers Asphalt Plant.

Rubbish pit passes Solid Waste Board

Staff Writer

A proposed Class I rubbish site in the Chickasaw Trail Industrial Park passed the Marshall County Solid Waste Authority Board and awaits the outcome of a vote by the board of supervisors.

The next step will be a public hearing to see how the citizens think on this proposal before it would be passed along to the Mississippi Department of Environmental Quality for review.

FFA thriving at Potts Camp

February 18-25 was National FFA Week. It was celebrated at Potts Camp High School with an inspirational program put on by state and national FFA Association members.

The group did exercises that helped students understand and remember key FFA concepts. The team concept was illustrated by forming a human table activity.

Directional boring

Daniel Lansdell, machine operator, with Cable Tel made hay while the sun was shining last week along South Center Street. The company had several crews working about Holly Springs, including directional boring on Higdon, Salem, West Boundary Extended in the Meadows, near Pizza Hut and along J.M. Ash Drive, according to Mitch Tomlinson with the city utility department. He added that the company has surveyed other areas and marked along Highway 4 East and other areas. Crew members said the new fiber optic underground cable will connect from cell tower to cell tower and, when operational, the rate of dropped calls between towers will decrease substantially creating nearly seamless coverage in the area.

Two face felony charges; one pleads guilty to burglary

Holly Springs police officers answered 87 calls last week and made two felony arrests, according to chief James Dean.
