Election Tuesday By SUE WATSON Staff Writer Election day arrives next week in Mississippi. The Democratic and Republican party primaries will be held Tuesday, March 13. Polls open at 7 a.m. and close at 7 p.m. Absentee
ballots may be cast in the circuit clerk’s office during regular hours
on weekdays and from 8 a.m. until noon on Saturday, March 10, according
to Lucy Carpenter, Marshall County circuit clerk. March 10 at noon is
the deadline to vote absentee. Anyone wanting a
mail-out ballot (those who cannot come to the courthouse to vote
absentee) may call the circuit clerk’s office and request a ballot be
sent in the mail, Carpenter said. Call 662-252-3434, to request a
mail-out ballot. Mail-out ballots must be
returned to the circuit clerk’s office on or before Monday, March 12,
at 5 p.m. in order to be counted, she said. The Republican Party ballot includes the following: For
President of the United States – Michele Bachmann, Newt Gingrich, Jon
Huntsman, Gary Johnson, Ron Paul, Rick Perry, Mitt Romney, Rick
Santorum. For United States Senate – E. Allen Hathcock, Robert Maloney, Roger F. Wicker. For U.S. House of Representatives 1st Congressional District – Robert Estes, Alan Nunnelee, Henry Ross. The Democratic ballot includes: For United States President – Barack Obama. For United States Senate – Albert N. Gore Jr., Will Oatis, Roger Weiner. For U.S. House of Representatives 1st Congressional District – Brad Morris. Referendum in Byhalia In
the Town of Byhalia, voters will see a referendum concerning a tax levy
as part of the March 13 ballot. The amount of the tax is 2 percent of
the gross proceeds of room rentals for each motel and hotel. The
proceeds will provide revenue to enhance tourism and parks and
recreation, according to a resolution approved by the mayor and board
of aldermen. Voters will choose “for the tax” or “against the tax.” If the measure passes by a margin of 60 percent of qualified electors voting, the tax will become effective April 1, 2012. The referendum will be on the ballot at the Byhalia Fire Department voting precinct at 24 Highway 309 North.
