News BriefsSpecial election set for Tuesday in Potts Camp The Town of Potts Camp will hold a special election for alderman next Tuesday, Jan. 10. Candidates are Deborah Clayton, Jimmie Collins, Dorothy Lesure and Johnny Westmoreland. The
winner will fill a seat formerly held by Mary Houston, who was elected
mayor in a November special election after the death of mayor Ricky
Lesure in October. Polls will be open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. on election day, January 10. If necessary, a runoff will be held Tuesday, Jan. 24. Firemen, officers meet on court this Saturday The
Holly Springs Fire Department employees have challenged the Marshall
County Sheriff’s Department and Holly Springs Police Department to a
basketball game. Proceeds will go to a charity in Marshall County. The
“Red Lights vs. Blue Lights” game (also being billed as the “Guns and
Hoses” game) is set for 6 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 7, at the Eddie Lee Smith
Multi-Purpose Building in the city. Doors open at 5:30 p.m. Tickets
are $3 each with children 10 and under admitted free. For more

disturbances, 2; animal-related calls, 1; assists, 2; motor vehicle
accidents, 3; fires, 2; and medical, 2. Byhalia police officers made three arrests during the past week. Legislative session kicks off in Jackson Gov.-elect Phil Bryant called the Senate to order Tuesday of this week, marking the beginning of the 2012 legislative session. The Senate’s 52 members took the oath of office, including 15 new senators. “With
our leaders working together, we can achieve great things for
Mississippi,” said Bryant, who has been at the helm of the Senate as
lieutenant governor for four years. Tuesday and Wednesday (of this week) are Bryant’s final days as the Senate’s leader before he becomes governor on January 10. |
