Murder suspect caught in St. Louis Rico R.
Fleming, aka Rico Pool, wanted by the Marshall County Sheriff’s
Department for one count of murder and five counts of drive-by
shooting, was captured Tuesday by law enforcement officers. Fleming,
22, of Moscow, Tenn., was taken into custody in the St. Louis,
Missouri, area by officers with the United States Marshals Service,
according to Sheriff Kenny Dickerson. The shooting occurred early
Christmas morning 2011 on Highway 72. Full Story

Holly Springs’ new police chief, James Dean, is set to take the helm of the department next Monday, Jan. 9. In
town recently to arrange housing, Dean said he has 13 years in law
enforcement and security. He served as chief of police in New Florence,
Missouri, three and a half years and as chief in Rosebud, Missouri, two
years. Dean also was employed as a road deputy
and investigator for the Montgomery County, Missouri, Sheriff’s
Department and was second in command at Gasconade County Sheriff’s
Department in Missouri. He has over five years experience in

A street adjacent to the Rust College campus that long needed attention has a new facelift. Martin
Street, named by the late mayor Sam Coopwood after the originator of
the neighborhood, has been restored, complete with brick sidewalks and
brick fencing. About 13 homes were rebuilt or renovated on the street
through a grant obtained by Rust College to upgrade neighboring streets

Two in custody; one still at large By SUE WATSON Staff Writer Two
suspects have been apprehended in the Christmas Day drive-by shooting
into an automobile on Highway 72 and a third is still on the lam,
according to Sheriff Kenny Dickerson. He said Rico R. Fleming, 22, of the Moscow, Tenn., area, is still at large. Full Story

Newly elected county officials were sworn in before the Honorable James D. “Jimmy” Maxwell Tuesday with words of advice. Maxwell, judge with the Mississippi Court of Appeals, presented lofty suggestions to those taking the oath of office. After
offering congratulations, Maxwell quoted Mark Twain, who said, “When
you are in politics, you are in a wasp’s nest with a short shirt tail.” Full Story
Colleagues honor retiring superintendent By SUE WATSON Staff Writer Don
Randolph, retiring as superintendent of education for Marshall County
School District after two terms, said goodbye and “thank you” to his
supporters over the years. His teachers,
administrators and staff threw the former basketball player from Potts
Camp High School a retirement party with all the goodies prepared by
his own people who have served with him loyally for eight years. Full Story
One killed in accident A Mt. Pleasant man died
in an automobile accident New Year’s morning just about a half a mile
from his home, according to coroner James Richard Anderson. He
said Gary Love, 27, who lives on Taska Road, was traveling north on the
county road when he apparently lost control of the 1999 Tahoe he was
driving. It left the road about 2:20 a.m. January 1 and struck a tree,
Anderson said. Love was pronounced dead on the scene, he said. Two
passengers, Stephen Roberts and Amy Nicole Wells, were injured and
transported to The Med in Memphis, Tenn., according to Anderson.

Police department adopts family
Officers
with the Holly Springs Police Department adopted a family at the Spring
Gardens Apartments to give Christmas gifts to this year. The family was
recommended by the Department of Human Services. Pictured are officers

The
investigative team of the Marshall County Sheriff’s Department adopted
the Ellis family to receive its gifts this year. Shown (from left) are
