Byers Lions drop two By BARRY BURLESON The H.W. Byers Lions lost their two games last week in the Coldwater Christmas Tournament. Byers fell 61-59 Tuesday, Dec. 27, to Independence after trailing 33-27 at the half. Anthony Mabon had a game-high 20 points for the Lions. Jarvis Jones followed with 14. Marterrious Rayford scored eight. The Class 1A Lions collided with 5A Clarksdale the next day and came up short, 63-57. Byers (6-5) was down 31-28 at the half and tied the game at 41 after three periods. Clarksdale outscored the Lions 22-16 in the fourth. “We did not play well either day,” coach Trey Lawrence said. “We had 31 turnovers (versus Clarksdale).” But his Byers team turned things around Friday with a huge win over Holly Springs (see separate story). |
