County seeks sewer funding By SUE WATSON A plan to lay a new sewer system in the Cayce Road/Highway 72 area, that has been languishing for lack of funding, may be getting a new foothold. The Marshall County Board of Supervisors passed a motion last week to ask the Mississippi Legislature for a bond bill of $1,130,400. School districts look at snow day options By SUE WATSON State Superintendent of Education Tom Burnham met with district school superintendents Monday to discuss the snow day bill signed last week by Gov. Haley Barbour. Thunderstorms replace winter temps, freezes By SUE WATSON If the groundhog, Punxsutawney Phil, told the truth this year, it appears spring has sprung in Marshall County a bit early. Winter snows and freezes have been replaced by warm days and thundershowers.
Turnout good for bird count in Hudsonville community By SUE WATSON The fourth Hudsonville Great Backyard Bird Count took place February 18 with counting at about three locations. The annual count is made possible through the interest in conservation and reestablishing threatened bird populations by landowners in the area including Tom and Jane Heineke, Chad Pope, Wanda and Mike Boone and Suzanne Langley. Hudsonville sets cleanup The second annual Keep Hudsonville Clean event is set for Saturday, March 19. Volunteers meet at 8 a.m. at the Hudsonville Community Center to get supplies and to register for door prizes. Holly Springs police respond to assault, business burglary Holly Springs police officers responded to 65 calls last week, according to chief Robert Pearson. Community Foundation unveils healthy living plan for Marshall residents Peggy Linton with The Community Foundation of Northwest Mississippi presented its Marshall County Healthy Community Strategic Plan at the Beckley Center on Tuesday, Feb 22. Byhalia police respond to 37 calls The Byhalia Police Department responded to 37 calls during the past week. Chief Gary Looney released the following report – alarm calls, 2; miscellaneous, 12; escorts, 7; juveniles, 2; thefts, 1; animal-related calls, 5; assists, 1; motor vehicle accidents, 1; and fires, 6. Byhalia police officers also made two arrests during the past week, according to Chief Looney. Marshall Academy Mock Trial places fourth in state competition Both Marshall Academy teams travelled to the statewide Mississippi High School Mock Trial competition February 25 and 26, where Team 2 took fourth place in the state overall, receiving one of only six coveted gavel awards. |
