The
Marshall Academy Mock Trial Teams have advanced to the state
competition rounds which will take place February 25-26 in Jackson. This
a great accomplishment for both teams, as only 20 teams from around the
state of Mississippi are invited to attend after regional competitions. They
have worked incredibly hard, practicing two and three times a week
since September and they are really ready to compete for a coveted “big
gavel” at state. To get them there, the teams have less than a week to raise enough money to pay for their accommodations and trip. Any
sponsorship that local citizens and businesses could offer would
benefit them greatly and show how much support they have from home as
they prepare for competition. If you are interested, please contact
Sarah Miller Taylor at Marshall Academy, 662-252-3449. “Thank you for your continued support of Marshall Academy and the Mock Trial teams,” she said. The
High School Mock Trial program is sponsored by the Young Lawyers
Division of the Mississippi Bar Association. Taylor again serves the
team as teacher sponsor. She is assisted by local attorneys Tony Farese of Ashland and Phillip Knecht of Holly Springs as coaches for the team. Marshall
Academy participates with two teams this year. Seniors on the teams
include Danielle Stanley, Anne Greer and Claire Liddy as attorneys,
Drew Rappa as a witness and Joey Brock and Kasey Shaw as timekeepers.
Juniors include Michael Farese, Katherine Farese and Davis Kelly as
attorneys and Ben Breithaupt, Brittany Stewart, Ashika Bhakta, Tyler
Cook, Kirby Jones and Elgin Lafever as witnesses. Sophomore Allyson
Viger and freshman Jasmine Milan will also play witnesses. Mock
Trial teaches students the ins and outs of the legal system and they
actually try fictitious court cases. Not only do participants learn
teamwork, leadership, strategic planning and professional skills, they
are able to expand their speaking, writing, reading and analytical
abilities. |
