Tax collections up, but budget tight By SUE WATSON The Marshall County Board of Supervisors got good news last week. Property tax collections were up by February 1, the deadline for property owners to pay their taxes without suffering a penalty. Tax collector Betty Byrd provided the financial update. Year 2010 tax collections so far have come to about $11 million as of January 10 with 12,773 cash transactions taking place at the tax office. Last year by January 10, $9.4 million had been collected with a total of 11,153 transactions, she said.
Bourgeois tapped for Main Street director By SUE WATSON The Holly Springs Main Street Association Board of Directors named Rebecca Bourgeois executive director at its February 9 meeting. Bourgeois is already part-time executive director of the Holly Springs Chamber of Commerce, a role she took over several months ago. She replaces Judy Smith, former Main Street executive director who asked to step out of that role this year. Leaders learn about Brownfields program By SUE WATSON A number of leaders in the business community and government were introduced to the Brownfields Program, a project that assesses site cleanup issues in local communities. Jere Trey Hess, program coordinator with Mississippi Department of Environmental Quality, office of pollution control, introduced the program driven by federal grant monies. Local governments must apply for the grants and make a case for the need to assess sites for potential toxicity or pollution, Hess said. Lynn Fitch announces candidacy in county By SUE WATSON The daughter of W.O. Fitch came home to announce her candidacy for state treasurer last week at a reception at Fitch Farms. She was accompanied by her son John Tucker Mitchell, the only grandson of Bill Fitch. Holly Springs police respond to assaults, disturbances, more Officers with the Holly Springs Police Department responded to 108 calls last week, according to chief Robert Pearson. Thomas speaks at conference By SUE WATSON Marshall County Chancery Clerk Chuck Thomas spoke at the statewide convention of chancery clerks last week on the topic of reconciling bank statements in a timely manner.
Legislature OKs snow-day bill A House bill to forgive up to 10 snow days has passed both houses of the Mississippi Legislature. The bill must be signed by Gov. Haley Barbour to go into effect. Marshall Academy Mock Trial Teams competing at state level this weekend The Marshall Academy Mock Trial Teams have advanced to the state competition rounds which will take place February 25-26 in Jackson.
