For the second straight season, the Marshall Academy Patriots are North AA champions. MA
scratched and clawed its way to a 52-46 win over Simpson Academy Monday
night in Grenada and then hoisted the first-place trophy. The
Pats improved their record to 28-7. They meet Bowling Green Wednesday
(of this week) at 5:15 p.m. in the Class AA State Tournament at
Brookhaven. Both Marshall and Simpson started slowly in the North AA title contest. The first points, scored by the Cougars, came three and a half minutes into the game. The Patriots trailed 11-5 after the first quarter. Brad
Bennett drained a pair of threes in the second to give MA some
momentum. Jordan Brock tied the game at 17 and then Peyton Lewis gave
Marshall the lead with a pair of free throws. Taylor
Maurey’s drive and basket with 16 seconds left provided the Pats their
biggest lead of the first half, 28-21. They were on top 29-23 at
intermission. Brock’s three to start the second half gave MA its largest advantage of the night, 32-23. But the Cougars went on a 14-2 run and were up 37-34 with 1:00 to go in the third. Another three from Brock tied the game at 37 at the end of the period. MA
went ahead and maintained a four- and five-point lead much of the
fourth. Dakota Dailey and Lewis nailed some pressure free throws in the
last 45 seconds, and the Patriots won by six. Maurey was the only Patriot scoring in double digits with 13. Lewis added nine. Brock and Dailey scored eight each. Named to the all-tournament team were Maurey, Chase Ferrell and Lewis. |
