Close to Nowhere By Linda Jones Maniacal quilting I’ve done it to myself again! Eventually, some folks learn, but apparently, I’m never going to! My
niece Laura is having fairly serious surgery in March. Laura and Dana
are the same age and much too young to have serious surgery! Laura’s
mom Carolyn and I met when Pop and I got married. We immediately
bonded, raised our daughters together and being grandmothers together
was just amazing. Carolyn died several years ago
and Laura and I gathered up all of her cotton blouses, etc. and packed
them up, so I could make quilts for Laura and Miranda and Al (her
husband). For a long time, I couldn’t unpack
those bags. Spurred by Laura’s surgery, I drug them out, sorted, cut,
recut, pieced and sewed and sewed and sewed. I
need to make six quilts out of those scraps -- Laura and Rickey,
Miranda, Victoria, Isabelle and of course, Al. I have four tops pieced. My friend Missy’s
daughter Alli recently had her second child, a daughter Amber, (I had
a terrific time making her 3-year-old son Levi a “Levi” quilt!). I
have a top pieced for Amber. My granddaughter’s former stepmother, whom
they really liked and enjoyed, has recently become a grandmother for
the first time. I can’t wait to make her grandson Asher a quilt! Now,
I’ve volunteered to make my oldest granddaughter’s Sunday School
teacher Andrea a “dedication” gown -- which to me is the exact same
gown as a christening gown and one of my all-time favorite things to
make! And I’m positive I’ll make Andrea a baby quilt also, another of my favorite things to make! That makes 11 quilts and one christening gown! All of them need to be made “now.” And
of course, Remy mentions constantly that I haven’t finished her calico
quilt yet. I’ve only been working on it a couple years now. And I don’t want to even think about Mere’s pig quilt. All I have done on that is the pig! For
Christmas, Pop gave me money. This year, I bought myself a quilt!
Beautiful white quilt with gorgeous peacocks and bright flowers spread
across the top. How else am I going to get one? I am happy to say that Dana and Kris both have quilts. And so does Pop! He has a Three Stooges quilt! And Paducah is coming in April! I’m vowing to not buy fabric! Or quilt patterns... maybe... |
