Jr. high Pats bring home district title
By BARRY BURLESON
The 2010-11 version of the Marshall Academy junior high Patriots kept the streak alive.
MA won its seventh straight boys District 1-AA championship January 29 at Indianola Academy.
“This group of young men are special,” coach Craig Dailey said about this year’s team. “They really care about one another. They came together to develop into a great team. Everyone accepted their roles, and they shocked a lot of people. I couldn’t be prouder of a group.”
The Patriots finished with an 18-1 record.
Marshall received a first-round bye and knocked off host Indianola 44-35 in the semi-finals Thursday.
Dakota Dailey poured in 40 points. Tobe West added three and Jacob Driggers one.
In the title game, the Patriots turned back Kirk Academy 52-48.
Dailey was the leading scorer with 35. Others contributing on offense were West with six, Driggers with four, Thomas Faulkenbery with three and Brian Novarese and Colt Lindsey with two each.
“Tobe, Thomas and Kevin (Harris) worked extremely hard and became very competent spot shooters and defenders,” Dailey said.
“Brian and Colt filled ‘stopper’ roles and the guard and post spots. Each brought their skills around and have the potential to be very good all-around basketball players.
“Jacob was my lone freshman and he was a work horse in the post and a solid offensive threat. His heart helped will us to a championship.
“Dakota had a huge role to fill for us on both ends of the floor each night out and he kept finding new ways to successfully accomplish his task. He had a season like very few I have ever coached. He has a chance to be special if he keeps working.”
