Byers sweeps opponents By BARRY BURLESON Editor H.W. Byers basketball teams enter tournament time on a roll. The
Lady Lions and Lions swept Ingomar and West Union last week in Region
2-1A play. They are the number one and number three seeds,
respectively, in this week’s tournament at Myrtle. The
girls completed the regular season 21-8 overall and 9-1 in the district
and the Byers boys 8-14 overall and 7-3 in the district. “I’m
well pleased with the way we’re playing right now,” said Jason
Thompson, head coach of the Lady Lions. “We ended the season like we
needed to and we’re looking forward to the post-season.” Byers-Ingomar Lady Lions Kourtney Coleman and Kyra Gulledge combined for 52 points Monday, Jan. 31, in an 87-35 rout of Ingomar. Byers was in control 35-10 at halftime. Coleman had 29 and K. Gulledge 23. Alexis Hardaway contributed 12. The Lions turned in a strong defensive effort and knocked off Ingomar 56-45 in the nightcap. They trailed 32-26 at the half but held the Falcons to just 13 points in the second half and rallied for the win. Ten Byers players scored. Anthony Mabon had 19. Byers-West Union The Byers girls concluded the regular season Tuesday, Feb. 1, with an easy 73-22 win over West Union. They outscored the Lady Eagles 28-7 in the second quarter and led by 32 at intermission. K. Gulledge poured in 28 points. Coleman added 15. The Byers boys stretched a four-point halftime lead to an 81-72 win over West Union. Mitchell
Wilson and Chris Echols were the top guns for coach Trey Lawrence’s
squad. They scored 16 and 14, respectively. Shantez Hearn had 14 and
Cordarious Stone 10. |
