Swearing-in ceremony scheduled next Tuesday

All elected officials in Marshall County and all department deputies will be sworn in Tuesday, Jan. 3, 2012, at 8:30 a.m. at the courthouse.

Judge James D. “Jimmy” Maxwell of Oxford – District 1, Position 1, Court of Appeals – has agreed to conduct the ceremony.

Everyone is invited to attend.

Maxwell was appointed to the court of appeals by Gov. Haley Barbour and took his position on the appellate court March 1, 2009. He has served as assistant U.S. Attorney for the Northern District of Mississippi in Oxford as a federal prosecutor prior to accepting duties on the Court of Appeals.

Early deadlines set for next week’s paper

The South Reporter announces early deadlines for its next edition.

The newspaper office will be closed Monday, Jan. 2, for the New Year’s holiday.

Deadline day for the January 5 edition of the newspaper will be this Friday, Dec. 30 – noon for classified advertising and 5 p.m. for all other advertising (including legal notices) and news and photos

Special election set for Jan. 10 in Potts Camp

The Town of Potts Camp will hold a special election for alderman on Tuesday, Jan. 10, 2012.

The winner will fill a seat formerly held by Mary Houston, who was elected mayor in a November special election after the death of mayor Ricky Lesure in October.

Qualifying deadline is December 31 at 5 p.m. at town hall. Necessary forms may be obtained at town hall between the hours of 9 a.m. and 1 p.m.

Polls will be open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. on election day, January 10.

Firemen, officers to meet in basketball

The Holly Springs Fire Department employees have challenged the Marshall County Sheriff’s Department and Holly Springs Police Department to a basketball game.

Proceeds will go to a charity in Marshall County.

The “Red Lights vs. Blue Lights” game (also being billed as the “Guns and Hoses” game) is set for 6 p.m. Jan. 7, 2012, at the Eddie Lee Smith Multi-Purpose Building in the city. Doors open at 5:30 p.m.

Tickets are $3 each with children 10 and under admitted free. For more information, call Tracy Jeffries at 544-0500 or Bo Jones at 291-2125.
