Anyone in Marshall County will gladly tell you that the contests between the schools in Marshall County are high entertainment. And
that premise was proven again Tuesday, Dec. 13, in the Lions’ Den. And
this is one of the best of the county rivalries, Byers and Byhalia. It
matters not that they are a couple of degrees apart in the state
classifications, these are pride games. Full Story
Hawks down rival Devils By CLAUDE VINSON Sports Editor This
was the rubber match between these two intercounty rivals – Holly
Springs and Ashland. The first meeting was at Ashland on December 2 and
that one was a split. Friday night, the Lady
Devils’ defense was holding the Lady Hawks way outside and they weren’t
connecting on any long balls. The Lady Devils were up 12-3 at the end

Patriots grab win in ‘tough place’ By BARRY BURLESON Editor It was a hardwood classic, bringing back memories of the Marshall Academy-Fayette Academy basketball rivalry of years ago. The
2011-12 edition of the Patriots spoiled the closing of the
tradition-rich gymnasium in Somerville, Tenn., with a 60-47 win in
enemy territory Saturday night. The Lady Vikings and Vikings will soon

teams from Independence seem to be making it a habit of defeating
Marshall County teams this season. They had taken a pair from Byhalia

Lions rout Rebels By BARRY BURLESON Editor The H.W. Byers Lions visited the West Oktibbeha Christmas Shootout Tourna-ment Saturday and left with a 17-point win. The Class 1A Lions, coached by Trey Lawrence, dominated Class 2A Scott Central 76-59 and improved their season mark to 6-2. Full Story
Basketball sign-up continues Holly Springs Parks and Recreation Department registration for men’s and women’s winter basketball is now open. The fee for each team is $200. Please register at city hall Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Registration deadline is December 26.

Byers Lady Lions hosting Magic Citi Showdown Some
of the best girls basketball teams from four states will gather at H.W.
Byers High School two days next week, December 22-23, for the Magic
Citi Showdown. States represented are Mississippi, Tennessee, Illinois and Georgia. There will be nine games Thursday and eight Friday at H.W. Byers. Full Story
Byhalia girls nail free throws for district win at North Panola By BARRY BURLESON Editor Some huge steals snatched momentum for the Byhalia girls Friday night. Then they nailed down the win from the charity stripe. Coach Renee Crenshaw’s team evened their district mark at 1-1 with a 52-44 road win at North Panola. Full Story
MA players earn all-district honors Several Marshall County Patriots received recognition with the announcement of the All-District 1-AA football team for 2011. Receiving first-team honors on offense were Kevin Fitzpatrick, Chase Ferrell, Aaron McAlexander, Neil Murphy and Brody Martin. Full Story
Byers DVDs still available Documentary DVDs from the H.W. Byers Lady Lions’ state championship season of 2010-2011 are still available. The cost is $10 each. The DVDs are available from the Athletic Booster Club at H.W. Byers High School. Proceeds
from the sale of the DVDs will go toward the purchase of state
championship rings for the members of the H.W. Byers girls basketball
team. The DVD, produced by Ben Guest, follows the
Lady Lions from pre-season practice all the way to the Class 1A state
championship game, where they beat Coldwater.

Players Kevin
Fitzpatrick (14), Chase Ferrell (32) and coach Barrett Donahoe
represented Marshall Academy in the Mississippi Association of
Independent Schools All-Star Football Game. It was played December 2 at
Mississippi College in Clinton. The North all-stars beat the South
27-20. Both Fitzpatrick and Ferrell are seniors at MA. |
