Lady Cardinals win by five By BARRY BURLESON Editor The Potts Camp Lady Cardinals, new to Region 2-2A, picked up a big road win to start district competition. Coach Tana Miller’s team turned back Calhoun City 63-58 Tuesday, Dec. 6. “We’re
newcomers,” said Coach Miller, referring to Potts Camp’s step up from
Class 1A to 2A this year. “And playing there (at Calhoun City) is
tough. To go there and get a win, that’s really good for us.” It’s the Lady Cardinals’ only district game prior to the holiday break. The
Potts Camp girls built a 19-10 lead in the first quarter and were up
28-23 at the half. Free throws proved to be the difference down the
stretch. For the game, the Lady Cards hit 22 of 25 attempts. “With a five-point win, making free throws really helped,” Miller said. “It was a physical game, and we responded.” Tenesha Woods tossed in 24 points. Zana Davis followed with 14. The Potts Camp boys battled Calhoun City hard for a half before falling 70-38. A
scrappy bunch of Cardinals were down 19-12 after one quarter and 29-20
at intermission. Then the Wildcats went on a 24-8 run in the third
period. Xavion Allen led the Cards with 10 points. Potts Camp-N. Pontotoc Potts Camp teams dropped home games versus Class 4A North Pontotoc Thursday night. A lackluster third quarter cost the Lady Cardinals in a 59-51 loss. Their record went to 5-6 on the season. Potts Camp was down by just four at the half but got outscored 18-7 in the third. “In
the third quarter, we had a lapse offensively and defensively,” Miller
said. “We cut it to four in the fourth but then we had to foul.” Woods was again the top gun for Potts Camp with 24. Davis had 13. “It was a mismatch for us size-wise,” Miller said. “We tried to handle that with our quickness. “We just need consistency in every quarter. We have to play a complete 32 minutes (four eight-minute quarters).” The young Potts Camp boys, looking for their first win, dropped a 65-43 decision to North Pontotoc. They were down 30-20 at half and fell behind by 18 points following three quarters. The
Lady Cardinals and Cardinals visited Byers Friday (see separate story).
They hosted Ashland Tuesday. They will visit Lewisburg Friday and will
play in the Ashland Christmas Tournament December 29-30.
