News BriefsOthers sign up to run for political offices A few more local candidates have signed up for political races. Those qualifying to run for various county elected positions since the publishing of last week’s newspaper include: • Sheriff – Dwight L. Harris. • Constable, South District – Carlisle Buford and Kenneth McMullen. • Justice Court Judge, North District, O.R. “Scooter” Dempsey. One earlier qualifier, Don Buford, withdrew from the race for supervisor, District 1. The deadline for qualifying for local elections is March 1, while candidates for state legislature positions have until June 1 to qualify. The primary election is Tuesday, August 2. The primary runoff election is Tuesday, Aug. 23. The general election is Tuesday, Nov. 8. A special runoff election was held Tuesday of this week for Northern District transportation commissioner. Look for results on the newspaper’s website – www.southreporter.com. Business After Hours set for next Tuesday Holly Springs Chamber of Commerce invites everyone to Business After Hours, hosted by First State Bank main branch. It will be held next Tuesday, Feb. 8, from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Correction to story in last week’s newspaper There was a mistake in a press release from the State Attorney General’s Office that was printed on page 1 of last week’s South Reporter. A Marshall County woman who was convicted of attempted false pretense recently by a jury in DeSoto County Circuit Court had not been employed with the Marshall County Public Defender’s Office. At the time of the crime, Sweetie B. Wooten, 38, of Holly Springs, falsely claimed she was employed at the Marshall County Public Defender’s office, according to the State Attorney General’s Office. Byhalia police officers go to variety of calls Byhalia police officers responded to 38 calls last week. Chief Gary Looney released the following report – alarm calls, 2; miscellaneous, 16; escorts, 7; disturbances, 1; domestic calls, 1; assists, 2; motor vehicle accidents, 4; fires, 2; medical calls, 3. Byhalia police officers also made four arrests last week. |
