Byhalia United Methodist Church sustained severe damage from a Saturday
night blaze, which destroyed a two-story addition. The sanctuary was
saved but sustained heavy smoke and water damage. Rev. Jackson and the
congregation met at the Baptist church Sunday morning. Knight of the Year District
Deputy of the Mississippi Jurisdiction for District One, James
Leatherwood, presented Victor Beard with the Knight of the Year plaque.
Beard is treasurer of the local council. 25 Years Ago - January 16, 1986 Non-hazardous spill Volunteer
firemen and authorities from the Department of Natural Resources
recovered 5,600 gallons of contaminated water Monday from a tanker
truck which overturned on Hwy. 78 near Victoria. After extinguishing a
fire which destroyed the tractor, firemen tested the material and found
it was non-hazardous. Crystal Utley celebrates sixth birthday with slumber party Crystal
Utley celebrated her sixth birthday with a slumber party on Jan. 3.
Amery Ewing, Julie Power and Lauren Webb joined Crystal Friday night
for hamburgers, cake and ice cream. The girls were entertained with a

Robert Tarzier, a Baptist preacher in exile, will speak at the First
Baptist Church Sunday night about being a Christian behind the Iron
Curtain. Prior to his escape from the Soviet Union, he was pastor of
Calvery Baptist Church at Riga, Latvia, an internationally known church. Eagle award Mike
Powell was presented with the Eagle award on Jan. 8 at the First
Baptist Church by Cecil May Jr. Mike, 15, is the son of Mr. and Mrs.
John H. Powell Jr. He was congratulate on his achievements by Dr. Earl
Kelly. Prayers for President-elect Kennedy asked for by Legion On
the eve of the inauguration of President-elect John F. Kennedy, the
American Legion has called for nationwide prayer for strength, wisdom
and guidance for Kennedy.
