Robert
Brewer, 56, of Byhalia, died Dec. 4, 2011, at Baptist DeSoto in
Southaven. He was the widower of Sue Brewer. He was a member of
Macedonia Baptist Church and a factory worker.
Services
were held at 2 p.m. on Dec. 6 at Holly Springs Funeral Home. Burial was
in Macedonia Baptist Cemetery in Byhalia.
He
leaves six sisters, Elizabeth McKee of Red Banks, Mary Renfro of
Memphis, Tenn., Rivers Norman, Diane Irvin, Linda Feathers, all of
Byhalia, Joy Simpson of Olive Branch; and several nieces and nephews.

Emma Mae Scales Cole
Emma
Mae Scales Cole, 85, of Holly Springs, died Nov. 1, 2011, at Gottlieb
Memorial Hospital, Melrose Park, Ill. She was married to the late Ben
T. Cole Sr., who was the father to two children of a prior marriage,
Ben T. Cole Jr. (Cynthia) of Holly Springs, and Ira Cole Johnson of Ft.
Lauderdale, Fla. She taught the second grade at Old Salem School in
Ashland for 25 years and was a retired school teacher with Benton
County Schools.
Services
were held at 12 noon
on Nov. 9 at Mt. Zion CME Church in Ashland, where she was a member.
Burial was in the church cemetery. Rev. L.G. Bogard officiated. J.F.
Brittenum and Son Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
She
had no children of her own, but she became mother to one of her
nephews, George (Clara) Perry Jr. of Holly Springs. She also leaves her
sister, Virginia Scales Dawkins of Bellwood, Ill.; three grandchildren,
George III, Gerald and Heather Perry, all of Holly Springs; four
great-grandchildren; and a special double cousin, Mae Louis Scales
Henry of Holly Springs.
She
was preceded in death
by five brothers, Billy, Joseph, Alfonzo, Eugene and Charles; and two
sisters, Irene and Ernestin Scales Perry.
Delilah Batts Evans
Delilah
Batts Evans, 78, of Holly Springs, died Dec. 1, 2011, at Baptist
Hospital-Union County in New Albany. She was the widow of Steward
Evans. She was a member of the church choir and a retired cook with
Rust College.
Visitation
will be at the funeral
home Dec. 9 from 2-7 p.m., with the family receiving visitors from 5-7
p.m.; and Dec. 10, 9-9:55 a.m. at the church.
Services
will be held at 10 a.m. on Dec. 10 at Samuel Chapel MB Church in
Ashland, where she was a member. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
Rev. Joseph Davis will officiate. J.F. Brittenum and Son Funeral Home
will be in charge of arrangements.
She
leaves
seven children, Evon Campbell of Hudsonville, Sarah Hudson of Ashland,
Lizzie Logan, Leatha Hampton, Jimmie King, Able Evans, Altheia Evans,
all of Ashland; two brothers, Joe Louis Batts of Detroit, Mich., Alfred
Kimbrough of Atlanta, Ga.; a special niece who cared for her, Sharon
Poole of Grand Junction, Tenn.; a god daughter, Janon Wilborn of
Memphis, Tenn.; 21 grandchildren and 33 great-grandchildren.
She
was preceded in death by a son, Lawrence Evans.
Wavie C. Hall
Wavie
C. Hall, 77, of Holly Springs, died Dec. 1, 2011, at Baptist DeSoto
Hospital in Southaven. The widower of Odessa Harden Hall, he was with
Hall and Sons Construction; a member of the deacon board and male
chorus.
Visitation
will be held Dec. 7 at the
funeral home, 2-7:30 p.m., with the family receiving from 6-7:30. and
Dec. 8 from 11 a.m.-12:55 at the church.
Services
will be held at 1 p.m. on Dec. 8 at Pleasant Grove MB Church in Red
Banks, where he was a member. Burial will be in Cottrell Memorial
Garden. Rev. S.A. Phillips will officiate. J.F. Brittenum and Son
Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.
He
leaves three children, Gregory W. Hall of Holly Springs, Carl E. Hall
of Southaven, Erma Renee Garth of Corinth; two sisters, Delois Walton,

Hall, Lee Willie Hall, Clifton Aldridge, all of Holly Springs, Curtis
Aldridge, Sammie Lee Aldridge, Willie Aldridge of Aurora, Ill., Leroy
Hall of Red Banks, Earl Boodman of Sunflower; 10 grandchildren and nine
great-grandchildren
He
was preceded in death by siblings, Suggs Hall Jr., Leon Hall, Jimmy
Aldridge, Bessie Styles.
Imogene Paton

Paton, 85, of Potts Camp, died Nov. 28, 2011, at Baptist Oxford. She
was a member of Salem Baptist Church.
Services
were held at 11 a.m. on Nov. 30 at Holly Springs Funeral Home Chapel.
Burial was in Bethlehem Methodist Cemetery in Potts Camp. Bro. Eric
Payne officiated.
She

Hughes, 82, of Holly Springs, died Nov. 27, 2011, at Methodist
Hospital-South in Memphis, Tenn. He was a retired laborer with the U.S.
Forestry Service.

Marie Mitchell, 59, of Byhalia, died Dec. 3, 2011, at The Sanctuary
Hospice House in Tupelo.

She
leaves her daughters, Pamela Shaw Stafford (Greg) of Birmingham, Ala.,
and Ginger Marie Collins (Glenn) of Dumas; a sister, Paula Sue Smoot
(Gary) of Byhalia; a stepbrother, Mitch Tomlinson of Holly Springs; her
stepfather, Mitchell Tomlinson of Holly Springs; and a half-brother,
Steve Zerbe of Colorado Springs, Colo.; and six grandchildren

was preceded in death by a brother, Robert Monroe Mitchell Jr.

Stanley Poff, 82, of Ashland, died Dec. 4, 2011, at Alliance
HealthCare. He was a postman with the U.S. Postal Service. He was
employed with Wurlitzer and the U.S. Forestry Service, and a Navy
veteran of Korea.
Services
were held at 11 a.m.
on Dec. 7 at Bluff Springs Baptist Church, where he was a member.
Burial was in the church cemetery. Bro. Gerald Hodges and Bro. Farron
Ash officiated. Holly Springs Funeral Home was in charge of
arrangements.
He
leaves his wife, Louise Poff;
three sons, Michael D. Poff of Jackson, Stanley D. Poff, Jeffery H.
Poff, both of Ashland; a daughter, Cynthia Hunt of Ashland; two
brothers, Joel D. Poff of Ashland, J.W. Poff of Hernando; a sister,
Arlene Gibson of Slayden; four grandchildren and six
great-grandchildren.

Pruda Lee Thornton

Lee Thornton, 93, of Mt. Pleasant, died Nov. 20, 2011, at Baptist
Hospital in Memphis, Tenn. She was the widow of Tonis B. Thornton. She
earned her nursing degree and worked as an LPN for 25 years. She was a
member of Elgin United Methodist Church in Elgin, Ala., and CrossPointe
Christian Fellowship in Olive Branch.
She
leaves
a son, Dennis B. Thornton (Kathy) of Celebration, Fla.; a daughter,
Jerry Nell Floyd (Donald) of Mt. Pleasant; two brothers, J.E.
Barringer, G.E. Barringer, both of Elgin, Ala.; seven grandchildren, 13
great-grandchildren and 18 great-great-grandchildren.
The
family requests memorials be sent to either of her church homes.
She
was preceded in death by a son, Luther S. Thornton.
Jay Vanzant

Vanzant, 85, of Hickory Flat, died Dec. 4, 2011, at Baptist Union
County Hospital in New Albany. He was owner and operator of small
engine repair shops and a Navy veteran of World War II.
Services
were held at 2 p.m. on Dec. 7 at Flat Rock Baptist Church, where he was
a member. Burial was in the church cemetery. Bro. Gary Yates and Bro.
Randy Buse officiated.
He
leaves his wife, Rachel
Vanzant; three sons, Larry Vanzant (Tina) of Lakeland, Tenn., Billy
Vanzant (Cathy) of Bartlett, Tenn., Ronnie Vanzant (Deborah) of Hickory
Flat; a sister, Rachel Shelton of Hickory Flat; eight grandchildren and
15 great-grandchildren.
