Close to Nowhere
• I went Christmas shopping, the Friday after Thanksgiving!
Well, maybe not Christmas shopping exactly. And certainly not “Black Friday” shopping.
There were horror stories on Facebook. Tales of sitting for hours on end to get $100 off something or get a television at an incredible price or, in some instances, just to get “whatever” at all.
Apparently I’m not dedicated enough.
My granddaughters’ other grandmother, Barb, who is travel nursing in California right now, but lives in Bruce, is able to get the most incredible things.
One year, she got the Binkster a Princess Diana memorial Beanie Baby. Another year, she was able to find a Laughing Elmo (a Tickle-Me Elmo?).
Both of my granddaughters and I had gone shopping last year on Black Friday and they were excited to go again this year. We do it differently!
We go in the afternoon and have lunch and stroll around and generally don’t buy much. I got one of the girls a heavy coat and one a new pair of shoes and then we went to Joann’s -- a fabric, craft, quilting, etc. store. I had fun in there. I bought over $40 worth of “toys” that I ordinarily wouldn’t have, but -- but --- I had coupons and spent -- taa-daaa - $14.37.
Technically, I guess I really didn’t go shopping on Black Friday. I went browsing on a day that just happened to be the busiest time of the year.
Besides, I’m going shopping this weekend on the square and around town. I’ll be much happier!
• I don’t think anyone is quite as tired of turkey as I am! One of my brothers came down Thanksgiving and we had a wonderful dinner -- turkey, dressing, green beans, potato salad, a new favorite of mine, apples, yams and cranberries (I don’t like cranberries so I substitute raisins) and four pumpkin pies. Both my brother and Pop are diabetic, so I made the pumpkin pies with a generic Splenda. The granddaughters cannot tell the difference.
All four pumpkin pies were gone by Friday morning (pumpkin pie is a delicious breakfast food).
We had leftovers Friday and they were so good. We had leftovers again Saturday and they were fine.
Sunday, our daughter was home from Florida and the other brother came down, so I cooked again.
Personally, I don’t care if I ever see turkey and dressing again. Pop is throwing the leftovers out to the cats and dogs just because we’re sick of looking at them!
Only 24 days left!
