Lady Bearcats fall at home to Millsaps By CLAUDE VINSON Sports Editor The Rust College Lady Bearcats had a single game November 21 at the Bears’ den. The Bearcats were on the road at the Western University Tournament in St. Louis, Mo. This
was the fourth game of the new season for the Lady Bearcats under their
new head coach Ato Green. The assistant is Vivian Gulledge. Rust was
1-2 going into this game with the Lady Majors of Millsaps College in
Jackson. The Lady Majors were 1-1. Both teams play in Division III of
the NCAA. The Lady Majors jumped out to a quick
5-0 lead. Both squads were getting good looks but they were not sinking
many. Neither was taking very good care of the ball. Telicia Gayden put
the Lady Bearcats on the board at the charity stripe by canning a pair
after being fouled in the lane. The next trip down the floor she had an
opportunity for an old-fashioned three but missed the line shot,
however, it gave Rust its first lead at 6-5. It
didn’t last long, Millsaps’ distance shooters popped a pair of treys
and midway through the first period the Lady Majors were up 16-8. Both
coaches had begun running in reserves early, three and four at a time.
This helped Rust in the rebounding department. Coupled
with some fast breaks they cut Millsaps’ 10-point lead in half. The
Lady Majors had a run of their own and added a few points. Rust was
flooding the lane and Jessica Brown stuck one just before the end of
the period to put the Lady Bearcats back by five at 34-29. The
Lady Bearcats were doing a much better job of keeping the score close
in the second 20 minutes. For the most part they were matching basket
for basket. They tied it twice before letting the visitors take a
four-point lead. Jessica Swanigan entered the game for the Lady
Bearcats with two minutes left and hit a quick turnaround to make the
game a two-pointer in Millsaps’ favor (57-55). The
final 56 seconds were very tense. The squads were vigorously defending
and coaches were using timeouts to try for the winning advantage. The
Lady Bearcats had moved out front at 58-57 with scant seconds left on
the clock. Lady Major Lovie Love, heavily guarded, pulled up in the
left corner just inside the trey range and hit nothing but net. That
was the final dagger. Rust went down 59-58. Rust’s
Gayden led the floor with 16 points, followed by Brown with nine,
Al’lisha Hudson with seven, Destini Shannon with six, Whitney McNeal
and Kala Williams with five apiece. Samantha
Perez led the Lady Majors with 13, next was Shante Morton with 12,
Velvet Johnson with 11 and Love with nine. Natasha Mbenza hit six and
Britteni Earl had five. The Lady Bearcats’ next
home game was scheduled for November 28 versus Rhodes College. The
Bearcats were scheduled to play Blue Mountain on the same date at 7 p.m.
