Hawks win close contest versus Myrtle By CLAUDE VINSON The teams of Holly High had two consecutive play dates last week on their home court. The first was Thursday against the always-tough teams of Myrtle. The second was with the always-tough Lions of H.W. Byers Friday. Holly Springs, H.W. Byers split By CLAUDE VINSON Another team with a Dandy Dozen player on its roster invaded the Hawks’ gym on Friday night – the second in as many days. Alexis Hardaway and the H.W. Byers Lady Lions visited Holly Springs Friday after Aspriona Gilbert and the Myrtle Lady Hawks Thursday. Behind The Scoreboard BCS changes The talk of the town is the changing picture in the BCS standings. The standings will change again on late Sunday evening (November 20) after a few very important games are completed. Lady Lions going to next level By BARRY BURLESON Coach Jason Thompson referred to Kyra Gulledge and Alexis Hardaway as “pillars of our program.” The two H.W. Byers seniors signed Division I college basketball scholarships Thursday in the school library. Hardaway will play for Austin Peay State University in Clarksville, Tenn., and Gulledge for Furman University in Greenville, S.C. Lady Lions, Devils get wins in rivalry By CLAUDE VINSON The teams at H.W. Byers made their first homestand of the new season Tuesday night of last week. They met a neighbor from down the road but in a different county. The Lady Lions were 3-0 after a successful road campaign. State championship DVDs from Lady Lions’ season on sale Documentary DVDs from the H.W. Byers Lady Lions’ state championship season of 2010-2011 are now available. The cost is $10 each. The DVDs are available from coach Jason Thompson at H.W. Byers High School. Proceeds from the sale of the DVDs will go toward the purchase of state championship rings for the members of the H.W. Byers girls basketball team. The DVD, produced by Ben Guest, follows the Lady Lions from pre-season practice all the way to the Class 1A state championship game, where they beat Coldwater.
Fitzpatrick going to Arkansas St. By BARRY BURLESON November 16 was indeed a special day for Kevin Fitzpatrick. The Marshall Academy senior signed a college baseball scholarship with Arkansas State University. “I’ve always wanted this opportunity,” he said. “I’ve worked hard at it. I’ve been playing since I was 3. Jr. high Cardinals finish 5-0 The 2011 football season was a very exciting one for the Potts Camp junior high Cardinals. There were ups and downs, but the hard work paid off. After several hard weeks of practice, the Cardinals were ready to begin the season. Lady Cardinals beat rival Rebels By BARRY BURLESON The Potts Camp Lady Cardinals traveled a short distance east on Highway 78 November 15 and knocked off rival Hickory Flat. The visitors used a strong third quarter to pick up the 59-47 win and improve to 4-1 on the season. Byhalia loses to Horn Lake By BARRY BURLESON Class 6A Horn Lake drove the short distance to Marshall County Friday night and left with a pair of 20-plus-point wins over 3A Byhalia. The Lady Eagles handed the Lady Indians their first loss of the season, 59-34. Patriots knock off Hillcrest by eight By BARRY BURLESON The Marshall Academy basketball Patriots found themselves in an early season playoff atmosphere Saturday night. The defending Class AA state champions went on the road and knocked off Class AAA Hillcrest 66-58. |
