Patriots knock off Hillcrest by eight By BARRY BURLESON Editor The Marshall Academy basketball Patriots found themselves in an early season playoff atmosphere Saturday night. The defending Class AA state champions went on the road and knocked off Class AAA Hillcrest 66-58. Last
year Hillcrest was a Class AA school and in the Pats’ run to the state
crown they shocked the Cougars on a last-second shot. “Words
would not do the night justice,” coach Craig Dailey said about a 66-58
victory last weekend. “You would have had to experienced it to
understand it. “It’s fair to say we have a major
rivalry with this group. It was a big early season win in an extremely
hostile and volatile environment.” Freshman
Dakota Dailey played like a senior as he had a 33-point night. Kevin
Fitzpatrick, who shifted to basketball after a football playoff game
the night before, scored 13. The game was tied at 30 at the half. MA (4-1 on the season) outscored the Cougars 19-13 in the third and 17-15 in the fourth. The Lady Patriots had several team members battling a virus and lost 38-21 to Hillcrest. MA (4-4) trailed 18-10 at the half and got outscored 10-0 in the third. Lane Cunningham led Marshall with eight points. Marshall-Lee (Ark.) The Patriots and Lady Patriots visited Marianna, Ark., Thursday of last week and swept the Cougars. A red-hot Brad Bennett poured in 31 points in MA’s 69-50 victory. Dailey followed with 17. The Pats were up 37-30 at halftime. “It took us a little time, but we finally pulled away from a gritty Lee bunch,” Coach Dailey said Three MA girls scored in double digits as they downed Lee 61-56 in overtime. Emma Elgin had 23, Elizabeth Skelton 16 and Codie Robertson 10. Elgin
drilled six three-pointers. Skelton scored 11 of her total in the
fourth and OT. Robertson had her “best all-around game of the year,”
Dailey said. The game was knotted at 52 at the end of regulation. “This was a big win for this group,” he said. “I am very proud of how they found a way to win in the end.” The
MA boys played in the Southaven Turkey Shootout Monday and Tuesday.
Marshall squads start District 1-AA play next Tuesday, Nov. 29, when
they host North Delta.
