1A H.W. Byers showed the “will of a champion,” coach Jason Thompson
said, and knocked off Class 6A Columbus 62-58 in the Newton Classic.
The Lady Lions are ranked sixth in the Clarion-Ledger’s top 10 teams

Holly High splits with North Panola By CLAUDE VINSON Sports Editor The Holly High basketball season got underway November 7 with home games versus the Cougar teams of North Panola. The
games were billed as “The Patricia Selman Classic,” a tribute to the
late assistant police chief of Holly Springs. Naylond Hayes, head coach
of the Hawks, said he felt it was a fitting honor for an individual who

must travel about five hours to River Oaks, La., for its next game
Friday at 7 p.m. The winner advances to the state championship game
Friday, Nov. 25, at 5:30 p.m. at Millsaps College where it will face
