The Cardinals’ team score was 58, trailing champion J.Z. George, which had a 28. Finishing third was East Union (70), while Madison St. Joseph (114) took fourth. H.W. Byers wins; trip to Shaw next By BARRY BURLESON The H.W. Byers Lions had a choice to make after an 0-3 start. “They could either fall apart or come closer together,” coach James Kimbrough said. “They chose to come together and play good football.” They proceeded to win six out of their final eight games, good enough to put them in the state playoffs in just their first season of district competition. The latest victory was a 54-6 blowout of Biggersville Friday night at home. Indians’ playoff run halted at Booneville By CLAUDE VINSON The Byhalia Indians came up short in their first round playoff battle at Northeast Community College Tiger Stadium in the heart of Booneville last Friday night. With the 21-6 loss, coach Markeith Washington’s Byhalia team ends the season at 6-6 overall. Well, apparently that didn’t exactly carry over to the prediction of the outcome of the “game of the century.” If you talked collegiate football any time last week, no matter how long the conversation, it usually ended with the Crimson Tide coming away with the win on Saturday evening. Danley named all-star; Collins breaks record By BARRY BURLESON A Byhalia High School senior has been selected to play in the Bernard Blackwell All-Star Football Game. Another Indian has shattered a school record. Jamal Danley, a guard on offense and a tackle on defense for the Indians, will play for the North in the annual game Saturday, Dec. 17. The state all-star contest will be played at the Biloxi High School stadium and kick off at 12 noon. New basketball season underway By BARRY BURLESON Basketball is in full swing this week in Marshall County. The Marshall Academy Patriots and Lady Patriots have begun their season with the girls starting 2-3 and the boys 1-1. The Patriots are the defending Class AA state champions. Competitive youth baseball team forming in Holly Springs Players are being sought for a competitive 7 and under coach pitch baseball team based in the Holly Springs area. Patriots to face Rebels By BARRY BURLESON Marshall Academy will host a familiar foe in round two of the state playoffs this Friday at 7 p.m. Carroll Academy, a fellow member of District 1-AA, shocked Leake Academy 35-32 last Friday on the road. Byers DVDs available Documentary DVDs from the H.W. Byers Lady Lions’ state championship season of 2010-2011 are now available. The cost is $10 each. The DVDs are available from coach Jason Thompson at H.W. Byers High School. Defending champs sixth in Super 10; atop Class A poll By BARRY BURLESON The honors keep coming year after year for the H.W. Byers High School girls basketball program. The Lady Lions, defending state champions, find themselves ranked number one in the pre-season in Class 1A and a senior team member is listed as one of the top players in the state. |
