Taylor, Stone win; Bryant governor

An incumbent county supervisor and a state senator won re-election Tuesday.

Also a Holly Springs native was elected to a statewide office.

Democrat Keith Taylor claimed a fourth term as District 3 supervisor. He beat Republican Terry Rodgers 1,399 votes to 518, according to unofficial totals.

Waterford wants to save P.O.

Sixty-four residents in the Waterford Post Office mailing area listened intently last week to the chance the post office will be closed as early as next year.

Dana Amos, manager of post office operations for 200 post offices, said he has been busy of late going to rural communities like Waterford to discuss possible closings. Eighty post offices, most rural, are on study lists for possible closing in Mississippi, he said, with 64 of those added to the list this summer.

Speed, weight limits discussed

The Marshall County Board of Supervisors asked how to set speed limits on some roads requested by residents.

County engineer Larry Britt said supervisors have authority to set speed limits and that Red Banks Road south of Lee’s Crossing has been a trouble area for speeding.

Rescued kitty joins law firm family

Holly Springs has a new kitten resident, Kit Kat, rescued by a stranger from inside a taped box in a dumpster at Dollar General in Baldwyn.

The kitty, a six-week-old female weighing about two or three ounces when she was rescued, was turned over to Lisa Carlton and the crew at Smith Whaley Law Firm to get her first set of wings.

Byhalia police visit classroom

Byhalia police officers Kerry Reid and James Houston visited with the Headstart Class at Kid’s World Daycare in Byhalia. The officers visited with the kids and told them what the police are here to do for the public. They also let them look at the police car.

Byhalia police officers respond to 30 calls

The Byhalia Police Department responded to 30 calls during the past week.

Chief Gary Looney released the following report – alarm calls, 1; miscellaneous, 8; escorts, 5; juveniles, 1; thefts, 2; disturbances, 1; assists, 2; motor vehicle accidents, 4; fires, 2; and medical, 4.

Several injured in wreck

A head-on collision, on Highway 178 in Byhalia Tuesday of last week, took the Jaws of Life to extricate a driver from a vehicle.

Air ambulance was called to take two females to The Med in Memphis, Tenn., and an under-a-month-old baby was transported to Le Bonheur Hospital. The driver of a second vehicle was transported to Baptist Memorial Hospital in Collierville, Tenn., according to patrolman Billy Suggs with the Byhalia Police Department.

Senior moms gone wild

Some mothers of senior football players at Marshall Academy showed their support for the Patriots in the state playoffs last Friday by going somewhat wild with their attire. The Patriots host Carroll Academy this Friday at 7 p.m. in the second round.

Rust Founders’ Parade this Saturday

The 145th Founders’ Celebration is underway at Rust College.

The coronation of Miss Rust College is set for Thursday, Nov. 10, at 8 p.m. in the McMillan Multi-Purpose Center on campus. An Alumni and Friends Awards Banquet will be held Friday at 6 p.m. in Shaw Cafeteria. The Founders’ Parade will roll through downtown Holly Springs Saturday at 11 a.m.

The homecoming basketball games begin Saturday at 5:30 p.m. with the Rust College Lady Bearcats and Bearcats hosting Lemoyne-Owen.

A Founders’ Breakfast is set for Sunday, Nov. 13, at 8 a.m. in Shaw Cafeteria, followed by a Memorial Service at 9:15 a.m. at the gravesite of Rev. A.C. McDonald in Hill Crest Cemetery.

The 145th Founders’ Convocation starts at 11 a.m. Sunday in the Doxey Alumni Fine Arts-Communication Center.
