Marshall Lady Patriots off to 2-1 start
By BARRY BURLESON
The Marshall Academy Lady Patriots tipped off their basketball season by going 2-1 in the Magnolia Heights Tournament.
They rallied from a 23-17 halftime deficit Tuesday of last week to beat the host Lady Chiefs 49-32.
Emma Elgin led the way with 16 points. Lane Cunningham had 10. Elizabeth Skelton and Codie Robertson scored eight each.
“Magnolia Heights came out on fire,” coach Craig Dailey said. “I told the kids to just keep guarding and they would cool off. We held them to the first-quarter amount (16) for the next three quarters.”
The Lady Patriots are competing with three varsity players and the rest junior high girls playing up.
Elgin was on fire the next night versus Marvell Academy (Ark.). She blistered the nets for 28 points, including six three-pointers, in a 48-31 win.
Skelton was also in double digits with 14.
“We had another solid defensive night, especially out of the gate,” he said.
The MA girls closed the tournament Thursday with a 68-24 loss to the Memphis-Area Home Education Association team.
The Lady Pats fell behind 29-9 after one period.
Elgin had 19 points.
“MHEA was a buzz saw,” Dailey said. “They have done a great job of amassing some major talent.”
