Marshall Academy had its second lowest point total of the season and Potts Camp its lowest. The
first edition of the intracounty football rival, involving two
typically high-scoring offenses, turned into a hard-hitting defensive
battle. The Patriots knocked off the Cardinals 21-9 Friday night in

Indians secure playoff spot By CLAUDE VINSON Sports Editor The Byhalia Indians solidly locked up their spot in the playoffs with a home win over M.S. Palmer last Friday night. Playing
with their first completely healthy roster since the first game of the
season, the Indians began early to extinguish the Dragons’ flames.

The
Coldwater Cougars came to the H.W. Byers Lions’ Den last Friday for a
game which had some import for both teams in their quests for a
preferred berth in the Class 1A playoff seedings. The
Cougars won the toss and elected to receive with Jordan Robinson
calling the signals. They logged a pair of quick first downs and then
Kalonji Mack skirted left for a runaway six. The conversion try failed
and Coldwater led 6-0. Full Story

am I supposed to be, some kind of jinx or something? Don’t answer that.
It is certainly strange that one week after selecting the Detroit Lions
as my team of choice for the future, not based on their undefeated
record of 5-0 at the time (hee, hee), they go and lose their first game

Potts Camp boys place first in meet; girls finish second • Roberts beats all runners By BARRY BURLESON Editor Potts Camp had a strong showing in a cross country meet October 8 hosted by Itawamba Agricultural High School in Fulton. The
varsity boys placed first, with Kris Roberts atop the entire list of 61
runners, and the varsity girls came in second. The excellent finishes
were versus all classifications, most of them 4A. Full Story
DVDs available from Byers’ state title season Documentary DVDs from the H.W. Byers Lady Lions’ state championship season of 2010-2011 are now available. The cost is $10 each. The DVDs are available from coach Jason Thompson at H.W. Byers High School.
Hawks’ rally comes up short By BARRY BURLESON Editor A loss last Friday night at Belmont puts Holly Springs in a must-win situation this week to assure itself a state playoff spot. The
Hawks fell behind 21-0 in the first half and almost rallied for the
win, falling short 21-13. They go to 4-6 overall and 2-2 in Region
1-3A. A road trip to unbeaten Kossuth awaits. The top four teams in the

Barry’s 77, Union University captured the 2011 BMC Fall Invitational by
one shot over Blue Mountain College Wednesday, Oct. 19. On
a cold, blustery day at the 6,700-yard, par 72 Kirkwood National Golf
Club in Holly Springs, Union posted a team score of 324, one shot ahead
of host BMC. Bethel University finished third at 327 and Lyon College
was fourth at 339. Full Story
Basketball registration continues until Oct. 31 The City of Holly Springs Parks and Recreation Department is extending basketball registration at city hall to Monday, Oct. 31. The first practice will be Saturday, Nov. 5, at 9 a.m. at the Eddie L. Smith Multi-Purpose Building for ages 5 through 12. Also,
children can learn the techniques of judo. Lucious Johnson, a member of
Judo USA, will be on hand November 5 to answer questions and register
persons for judo classes. The classes will be held at the Eddie L. Smith Multi-Purpose Building.
Softball all-star Gilliam helps lead North to victory By BARRY BURLESON Editor Chelsey Gilliam wrapped up her high school softball career with an outstanding performance in the state all-star game. The
Marshall Academy senior went two for three at the plate and scored the
game-winning run in the North’s 3-2 win over the South October 18. Full Story
Hunter safety November 3-5 A Hunter Safety Class will be held November 3-5 at Potts Camp High School, Highway 178 East. The class is scheduled November 3 and 4 from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. and November 5 from 8 a.m. until.
