Community NewsPotts Camp News Dale Hollingsworth Locals attend Scholarship Recognition Ceremony at Northwest in memory of Charley and Paula Gurley Happy
birthday to the following: Margaret Wilson, Margaret Hart, Madisyn
Cobbs, Brad Farr, Joshua and Jeremy Green, Halley Holtzlander and
Daniel Smothers. Jean Gurley and Georgia Cobbs,
along with Margaret Hart, Cindy Passons, Mary Minor, Joan Gurley,
Arthur and Doris Poole, Sue Rowland, Pam Gurley and Nancy Green
attended a Scholarship Recognition ceremony on Tuesday, Oct. 4, at
Northwest Community College in Senatobia in memory of Charley Gurley
and Paula Gurley. Temperance Hill Baptist Church
hosted their Fourth Annual Christian Community Fall Festival on
Saturday, Oct. 1. Providing special music during the day were the
Songlight Singers of Amory, Linda Stacks, Gale Tate, Andy Roe, Fletcher
Akins, Philip Rover, Lisa Mathis (accompanied by her husband, Dwayne,
at the piano), and pastor Ken Cooper. The children enjoyed pony rides,
the climbing wall, and other games. Mt. Moriah Baptist Church brought
cakes, pies, cookies and other desserts for the sweet booth. I
was glad to see Lela and Kerry Hale when they came to visit me on
Monday, also, my daughter Betty. Lela and Betty taught school together
at West Union and they enjoyed visiting with each other. Pray
for my special friends, Charles Henderson and Henry Tutor. Also pray
for Betty Fincher who visited her doctor recently, James (Spider) Cook,
who had a serious operation and needs special prayers, Henry and Mary
Jarrett, and Jimmy Armstrong. I called my oldest
son, Jimmy Hollingsworth, on his birthday, Oct. 3 in Tupelo. He and
his wife, Martha, have four wonderful children. History Many
people don’t know why Mary Reid was so important to our town. She was
the only daughter of the first Potts Camp settlers, Col. E.F. Potts and
wife, Elizabeth. She married Charlie Reid. Mary gave the land for a
depot and right-of-way so the railroad could come this way. She also
gave land for schools and churches of both races. Mary Reid School and
Reid’s Gift Church are named for her.
Jazzy’s Dance and Williams Clinic
For
the past three years, Williams Medical Clinic has come and administered
sports physicals to the participants in the dance program. Jazzy’s
Dance has been practicing hard each week working towards a successful
competitive dance season. In July, some of the dancers even
participated in a dance camp provided by an artistic dance company
located out of Memphis, Tenn. Jazzy’s Dance, instructed by Casshaunda
Davis-Riddle, is a dance program that represents the North MS area in
many of their competitive events; it has been in existence since 2004.
The program not only teaches the art of dance, but also promotes its
participants to be self-confident, competitive and goal-driven. Their
showcase night will be on Thursday, October 13, followed by their first
competition sponsored by Deep South in Jackson, on Sunday, October 16.
Pictured is one of Williams’ Clinic nurses examining a dance student.
Jazzy’s Dance would like to extend a big thanks to the clinic’s
administration and staff for their continued partnership in the efforts
of the dance program. |
