Runoff next Tuesday
By BARRY BURLESON
Last week Secretary of State Delbert Hosemann released certified results from the January 11 special election for transportation commissioner, Northern District.
No candidate received a majority of the total votes cast, so first- and second-place finishers John M.M. Caldwell and Mike Tagert will participate in a runoff election next Tuesday, Feb. 1.
Caldwell was the top vote getter January 11 with 10,713, followed by Tagert with 10,557.
The district covers 33 counties, including Marshall. Other districtwide totals from the January 11 vote were Warner McBride, 10,263; Dennis C. Grisham, 8,567; Joey Hood, 6,360; Ray Minor, 3,887; and Larry Lee, 763.
Certified results from Marshall County only showed Minor with 1,237 votes, McBride with 296, Caldwell with 174, Hood with 148, Grisham with 110, Tagert with 35 and Lee with 19.
Absentee voting is available for next week’s runoff. The regular hours of the Marshall County circuit clerk’s office is 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. The office will also be open this Saturday, Jan. 29, from 8 a.m. to 12 noon, which is the deadline for voting absentee for the February 1 election.
Polls will be open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. in Marshall County next Tuesday for selecting the new transportation commissioner, either Caldwell or Tagert.
