Rickey Bean, 45,
of Memphis, Tenn., died Sept. 20, 2011, at Methodist University
Hospital in Memphis. He was a member of Mt. Teamer CME Church in Holly
Springs. Services were held at 2 p.m. on Sept. 26 at J.F. Brittenum and Son Funeral Home Chapel. Burial was in Cottrell Memorial Garden. He
leaves his father, Rayford Bean of Raleigh, N.C.; his mother, Mollie

Ruby Jane Seldon-Benton, 75, died Sept. 20, 2011, at her home. Services
were held at 11 a.m. on Sept. 24 at Royal Chapel CME Church in Byhalia,

Boyd Jr., 48, of Memphis, Tenn., formerly of Holly Springs, died Sept.
18, 2011, at Veterans Medical Center in Memphis. He was a U.S. Army
veteran and a shipping clerk with UPS. Services
were held at 2:30 p.m. on Sept. 24 at Anderson Chapel CME Church, where
he was a member. Burial was in the Adolphus Chapel CME Church cemetery.

Allen Byrd, 71, of Lamar, died Aug. 19, 2011, in Ripley. He was a
member of Country Church, a farmer, a factory worker and a construction

Irene Carter, 93, of Southaven, died Sept. 21, 2011, at Baptist
Hospital in Memphis, Tenn. She was the widow of Dee Roy Carter, a
member of First Baptist of Holly Springs and store owner of Ruby’s
Store in Holly Springs for more than 40 years. Services

2011, in Waterford. He was a former member of True Bible Way Church in

F. “Bob” Lively, 68, of Memphis, Tenn., died Sept. 23, 2011. He was a
U.S. Marine veteran of Vietnam, receiving numerous commendations. He
was retired from the Shelby County Sheriff’s Department after 26 years,
including several years as the president of the Shelby County Deputy
Sheriff’s Assoc. and president of Courtesy Consultants Corp. for 20
years. He was a communicant of St. Ann’s Catholic Church in Bartlett,
Tenn. A Celebration of Life service will be held
at 5 p.m. on Oct. 1 at Memphis Funeral Home, Poplar Ave., Memphis,
Tenn. The family will receive friends beginning at 4 p.m. He
leaves two daughters, Rachelle Grice (Mike) and Candy Lively; a son,
Duke Lively (Kristie); his mother, Eileen Sha; a sister, Gayle Beck;

Nancy
Lenora Hairston Quinn, 70, of Collierville, Tenn., longtime resident of
Byhalia, died Sept. 26, 2011. Her first job was filing in her father’s
office at F.W. Dodge as a teenager. Her banking career started with
First of Atlanta Bank as a teller. She advanced to become executive
secretary then joined Union Planters National Bank in January 1974
until retirement in 2000 after more than 30 years in the banking
industry. A memorial service will be held at 11
a.m. on Sept. 29 at St. George’s Episcopal Church. Memphis Funeral Home
will be in charge of arrangements. She leaves her
husband of 35 years, Lawrence Roura Quinn; her stepdaughter, Laurie
Quinn Montroy and her husband Timothy Montroy of Auburn Hills, Mich.;
and four stepgrandchildren. She was preceded in death by siblings Alan Hairston, Martha Hairston Taylor and Ralph Martin Hairston III. The

Dempsey Raiford, 83, of Pacific Palisades, Calif., formerly of Holly
Springs, died Sept. 9, 2011. The widower of Karen Snell Kiersgard
Raiford, he was a veteran of the U.S. Navy. He was proficient in
Japanese, psychology, philosophy and trigonomentry. He was one of a
handful of black midshipmen to be accepted at the U.S. Naval Academy in
Annapolis, Md. He received his doctorate in law from Cornell University
in 1969. He was a registered patent lawyer and became an attorney and
counselor of the Supreme Court of the United States. He worked as an
attorney for Hughes Research in Malibu for more than 30 years. He
served on the Pacific Palisades Civic League board and was an active
member of the Unitarian Universalist Community Church for more than 50
years. Services were held on Sept. 19 at
Woodlawn Cemetery in Santa Monica, Ca. A memorial service will be held
at the Unitarian Universalist Community Church on Oct. 2. He leaves a daughter, Stacy Raiford of Santa Monica, and a granddaughter, Stacia Raiford-Ross of Las Vegas, Nev. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Joan Mhoon Raiford, a sister, Mattie Withers and a brother, Knowledge Nathaniel Davis. Lee Shipp, 75, of Holly Springs, died Sept. 26, 2011, at his home. He
was a member of Taylor’s Chapel CME Church in Victoria, and a retired
machine operator for Malone Concrete Company. Visitation is at the funeral home on Sept. 28 from 2 to 6 p.m. and at the church Sept. 29 from 10-10:55 a.m. Services
will be held at 11 a.m. on Sept. 29 at New Hope CME Church, with burial

He was a retired dispatcher and worked for 20 years at McLain
