Be Sure to check out our New Photo Gallery Belt tightening holds taxes steady By SUE WATSON Even though the county projects an ad valorem tax revenue shortfall of $368,260 in the general fund and approximately $400,000 in the road and bridge fund in fiscal year 2011-2012, the taxpayers of Marshall County will not pay more taxes due to belt-tightening measures taken by supervisors. Taxpayers in the towns of Potts Camp and Byhalia will not see an increase in ad valorem taxes, either, according to tax assessor and tax collector, Juanita Dillard and Betty Byrd, respectively. The Holly Springs School District has made giant steps in its overall accountability scores with a district rating of Successful. The 2011 accountability ratings were released last week by the Mississippi Department of Education. One school, Holly Springs Intermediate, rose from At Risk of Failing in 2010 to Successful this year, bringing the entire district up from Academic Watch to Successful. Holly Springs High School and Holly Springs Junior High scored Successful both this year and last year.
City-county airport seeks hangar funds By SUE WATSON The Holly Springs-Marshall County Airport will apply for funds to construct six new hangars, according to manager Justin Hall. He recently reported to the board of supervisors on projects and future plans to build the airport to meet expected demands of new growth coming to Marshall County. A

their farewells. Holly Springs police go to several burglary calls Holly Springs police officers responded to 95 calls last week and made one felony arrest, according to interim chief John Norman. He said Andrea C. Sims, 30, of the 200 block of West Woodward Avenue, was arrested and charged with domestic violence/aggravated assault. Byhalia police officers respond to theft, disturbance, three fires The Byhalia Police Department responded to 31 calls during the past week. Chief Gary Looney released the following report – alarm calls, 3; miscellaneous, 8; escorts, 7; thefts, 1; disturbances, 1; animal-related calls, 1; motor vehicle accidents, 3; fires, 3; medical calls, 3; harassment, 1. Byhalia police officers also made two arrests during the past week, according to Chief Looney. Northcentral sees growth By SUE WATSON With consolidation of its two facilities into one 20-acre site and 70,000-square-feet building at 4600 Northcentral Way in DeSoto County, Northcentral EPA is poised for another 50 years of growth. Kevin Doddridge, executive director of the power cooperative, reviewed future prospects for growth at the August membership luncheon of the Byhalia Area Chamber of Commerce, held at Craw de Lis in Byhalia. Children honored for winning artwork Over 137 children placed entries in the Strawberry Plains Audubon Center’s annual Hummingbird Celebration art contest. And the festival T-shirt was designed by local artist Robin Whitfield this year, according to Katie Boyle with the center. Winners received a free T-shirt, a thermos, or field glasses valued at over $100.
