Cardinals come up short vs. Mustangs
By CLAUDE VINSON
The Potts Camp Cardinals, using Byhalia field as their home venue and coming off of two convincing victories, vied with the Mustangs of Mantachie last Friday evening and lost by 10.
The Mustangs elected to receive and it went like this – pass, run over center, pass and punt. Dustin Carroll was calling the signals and kicking for Mantachie.
Jamarquis Foster came out of the backfield and was stacked up. He carried a third time and gave Potts Camp a fourth and four. Jordon Harris picked up the needed yardage on the next play. Ben Bolden was under center and he was mixing the plays. He called a fake-delay on a fourth and 4 at the 26. The pass fell incomplete and the Cardinals went out on downs.
Potts Camp’s defense was stifling and the Mustangs had to punt. Alex Beard blocked the punt and the Cardinals took over in the red zone. Bolden got into trouble in the backfield and had to rush his throw and the aerial was picked by Mantachie at their 4. The quarter ended at 0-0.
The Cardinals were over the ball early in the second and working on a second and 16. Bolden dumped a short screen to Jordon Harris, who went 30 yards before he was stopped. The Cards lost ground on miscues and faced a third and 38. Bolden reclaimed some of the lost yardage but they still had to punt.
The Mustangs gained a pair of successive first downs on some hard-nosed running. Carroll picked up a third first down, being stopped just outside the red zone. They got a first at the 13 and lost a yard on the next play. The Potts Camp defense really stiffened. The visitors set up for and Carroll kicked a field goal with 4:06 left in the second.
Bolden left the game because of a leg cramp and was replaced by Brantley Harris. The Cardinals had to punt. Mantachie picked up a first down on a reverse but the drive was killed two plays later when Brantley Harris intercepted a pass. Time expired before P.C. could capitalize on the possession. The score was 3-0 at the half.
Potts Camp received to start the second half but lost the ball to the Mustangs. They made some progress but had to settle for another field goal to make the score 6-0.
The Cardinals turned two firsts, then back-pedaled. They did get off a good punt and then drove Mantachie backward into a fourth and 25. Brantley Harris made a great punt return and Jordon Harris touched the pylon with the pigskin but the side judge ruled it short and placed the ball on the 2. Foster erased all doubt on the next carry, putting the Cards on the board. He came right back and added the deuce, giving Potts Camp the lead 8-6. The quarter ended on that score.
The Mustangs scored on a pass play from Carroll to Jack Nickles, hitting him cleanly for six but the extra-point try failed when the ball struck the left upright. However, they had grabbed the lead at 12-8.
Brantley Harris grabbed the kickoff and returned it 40-plus yards. Bolden, back in the game, wound up and pitched a perfect strike to Brantley Harris over a Mustang defender in the right corner of the end zone. Jordon Harris zipped over center for the two-pointer, making the score 16-12.
The clock was quickly winding down and Mantachie used Arthur Hollins and the big fullback, Mac Grimes, to move the ball downfield. The visitors scored first on a pass to Nickles and then on a fullback draw, kicking the extra point each time for a final score of 26-16.
The Cardinals (3-2), playing an independent schedule, will be away for the next three games, starting with Rossville Academy (Tenn.) this Friday.
