News BriefsRemembrance ride to pass through city On
September 18, the 11th annual Trail of Tears Motorcycle Ride from
Tennessee to Oklahoma will be passing through Holly Springs at
approximately 10:20 a.m. There will be around 175
to 250 motorcycles on this leg of the Trail of Tears Remembrance
Motorcycle Ride coming down Highway 7 on the way to Tahlequah,
Oklahoma. The ride will depart on Highway 4. This
ride is in remembrance of Native American tribes displaced due to the
Indian Removal Act of the 1830s. The goal is to educate the public to
this monumental and dark historical event and to honor the Native
Americans. In addition to raising awareness, the ride also raises funds for scholarships for Native American students. The
public is invited to come out along the route and show support to the
riders as they pass through the Holly Springs community. The riders
come from all over the United States and include Native American riders
who represent several tribal nations. For more information about the motorcycle ride, log on to www.trailoftears-remembrance.org. County library offers fine-free days The Marshall County Library System is offering fine-free book and audiobook returns, librarian Amanda McDonald said. The fine-free days are Thursdays from September 15 to October 13. McDonald
said the library has over $33,000 in over-due fines or other fines and
that the books and tapes are more valuable than the fines. The library
hopes to clear the fines off the books, she said, and get some of the
resource materials back. The overdue items may
simply be dropped in the outside drop slot on any of these Thursdays.
Or the person can bring the book in and put it on the return cart or
ask a librarian to print them a receipt showing they have returned the
book or tape. New library hours have been set
for the Ruth B. French Library in Byhalia beginning October 1. They
are: Monday (1 p.m.- 7 p.m.); Tuesday (1 p.m.-5 p.m.); Thursday (3 p.m.
- 7 p.m.); Friday (1 p.m.- 5 p.m.); and Saturday (10 a.m. - 12 p.m.). Library cards will be requested before a patron can check out a book, McDonald said. Bring your library card with you. Anyone who lacks a library card may request one by bringing in a photo I.D. and current address, she said. |
