The Marshall Academy soccer squad turned in a stellar defensive performance but fell 1-0 to Bayou Tuesday of last week at home. “The
defense played absolutely amazing,” coach Lance McGregor said. “We had
every player marked and minimized scoring opportunities for Bayou.
Every single girl on our defense came up with a big play at some point. “From a physical stand-point, we did not back down at all and really went after them.” He
said he was especially proud of Emma Elgin, Faith Lafever, and Ashika
Bhakta for “putting their bodies in front of the ball on every play, it
seemed.” He said Lane Cunningham played “with a toughness he always knew she had” and turned in her best game of the season. “It
was really nice to see Bailey Blaker going after it like she did,”
McGregor said. “Mayela Armendariz played very well in goal and came up
with some huge saves and did a nice job on her punts.” Offensively, Parker Stephenson, M.C. Hutchens and Blaker all had good looks at the goal. “We just have to find a way to pull the trigger a little quicker and get some more pop on our shots,” McGregor said. Marshall, winless on the season, again played shorthanded with 10 girls to start the game and then going down to nine at times. Bayou
scored on a free kick in the 60th minute of the game for the win. He
said the Lady Patriots committed a foul right outside the box and were
slow getting back on defense before Bayou got the shot off. “From
a coaching standpoint, I’d love to win every game, but I understand we
have to play with the hand we were dealt, with the short numbers, and
have to be pleased with the effort these girls give me,” McGregor said.
“They are an incredible group and have so much character. As adults, we
could learn a lot about the way they support each other and maybe learn
a little something from them.” The Lady Patriots
will go to Delta State University Saturday, Sept. 3, for an 11 a.m.
doubleheader versus River Oaks. Next Tuesday, Sept. 6, they travel to
Immanuel Christian for a 6:30 p.m. contest. |
