The Holly Springs Board of Aldermen recently approved a letter of commitment to the Mississippi Department of Transportation for the application for $1.5 million in road improvement funds. Public works director Micheal Crittle said the letter will allow the city to submit an application for federal State Transportation Program (STP) funds in an 80 percent/20 percent federal/city match. The money will be used to do paving overlay, drainage improvements, and curb and gutter installation in the areas of West Woodward Avenue and Sunset Acres Road, he said. The music and arts festival kicked off August 27 with something for everyone. It was held this year at the Byhalia Walking Track Park, a perfect area to spread out, Sawyer said. Bikers/Blues holds steady turnout By SUE WATSON There are five Bikers/Blues nights left this season and weather is cooling, making partying in the street more enjoyable. Turnout last week was estimated to be around 250 with four vendors turning out and no live entertainers on stage. Several bands missed their appointment, said Rebecca Bourgeois, executive director of Holly Springs Main Street.
Juveniles charged with burglary By BARRY BURLESON It took deputies just four hours to make one arrest after a burglary on Wall Hill Road, and a second suspect was in custody a few days later. Woman dies in accident A single vehicle accident on North Slayden Road claimed the life of a Tennessee woman August 25, according to coroner James Richard Anderson. Takeyta Rhyan, 30, of 520 Anderson Road, Moscow, Tenn., was driving southbound on North Slayden Road when she apparently lost control of her vehicle and was ejected when it flipped several times, he said. Ryan died of apparent head and neck injuries, he said. The accident occurred about 1.5 miles from Highway 72. City police go to 111 calls Holly Springs police officers responded to 111 calls last week. Runoff totals finalized Marshall County election results were certified last week, a day after the runoff races on August 23. Jerry Moore defeated Felicia Anderson Harvell in the runoff for county superintendent of education. According to official totals, Moore got 2,695 votes to Harvell’s 1,587. Byhalia police officers go to accidents, more The Byhalia Police Department responded to 33 calls last week. Chief Gary Looney released the following report – alarm calls, 5; miscellaneous, 11; escorts, 4; domestic calls, 1; assists, 1; motor vehicle accidents, 4; fires, 1; and medical calls, 6. Byhalia police officers also made seven arrests last week. |
