Close to Nowhere By Linda Jones Getting old is not for sissies! Friday, August 12, I will continue celebrating my birthday. I’ve been celebrating all week. I
started this past weekend out by buying myself an early birthday
present (and yes, I still expect presents on my actual birthday!). I
bought one of those “memory foam” mattress toppers. While it was fairly
expensive, the price was nothing compared to a king-sized memory foam
mattress. Now, most of us have purchased and laid
out some kind of foam padding on at least one or two mattresses. I
certainly have done my share of that, so I anticipated the same thing
laying out the new memory foam thing. I have a large bed, even for a king-size bed, but I’ve put a mattress cover on it before, so... Wrong!
The topper was apparently vacuumed packed in plastic. I eventually got
it out of all the packaging and it started expanding. And expanding.
And expanding. Pretty soon, there wasn’t room left in the bedroom for
me. But, I can do anything, so I attempted to put
the fabric cover over the memory foam. Do you know that until you have
fabric covering on memory foam, it sticks to everything and will not
move? I finally got my youngest brother, who is
visiting while recovering from a serious illness. He did something
really, really strange. As some kind of technical, boiler,
engineer-type person, he read the instructions! Really! Who reads
instructions? I had struggled with the huge piece of non-sliding foam stuff for about 30 minutes before I got Danny to help. After
he read the instructions, he managed to roll the mess up, get it off
the bed, lay down the fabric stuff, roll the foam back onto it and
stuff it into the fabric and zip it up. After you get the fabric cover on it, it can be moved without gluing itself to everything it touches. The
foam continued to expand for a while and now my bed is really tall. It
was tall before, but now, the miniature schnauzer and long-haired
miniature Chihuahua, who live under my feet, can’t get in the bed
anymore. The first night I slept on the foam, all the trouble and money was worth it! I’ve
heard that getting old is not for sissies. Getting old for me involves
arthritis and horrible hip pain; so bad some nights that I can’t lie
down. I can lie on my side now! And not scream! Memory foam stuff is wonderful! •
Monday after the “little” storm, our office was without power for over
two hours. Do you know you can’t do anything on a computer without
power? |
