Power was off in some parts of the central city Monday for about two and a quarter hours following a freakish thunderstorm that blew down heavy tree limbs. The rear section of the former Miller Shoe Store building downtown lost a portion of its roof and the back wall was damaged, according to owner Chelius Carter. A large tree behind the Fitch building, in the alley, split and broke over power and phone lines. A large limb in the corner of Ira and Lois Shipp’s front yard fell over power lines and into the street across from Becky Cupp’s yard at Chulahoma Avenue and South Center Street. Runoff Aug. 23 By BARRY BURLESON Six local races will be decided in the Tuesday, Aug. 23, Democratic Primary Runoff. Still up for grabs are the positions of superintendent of education, supervisor District 1, constable North, constable South, justice court judge North and state representative District 13. • Large crowd gathers for returns By SUE WATSON Election night fever was all over the Holly Springs court square last week as a large crowd turned out to await the election returns. All parking slips around the square were taken the night of August 2 and the courtroom was nearly full at times. Election workers had a long evening scanning absentee ballots and curbside ballots and the final unofficial results were available around 11:30 p.m. HOPE Walk warms hearts By SUE WATSON The town of Byhalia held its second walk for the cure July 28 with about 40 people on hand for the event. There were hugs and a few tears and there were smiles and laughter and music, too. The Hope Walk raised $5,144, so far. Bond issue for sewer delayed By SUE WATSON The money for construction of a sewer system for two mobile home park areas on either side of Highway 72 at Cayce Road is on the rocks again. Supervisors have had their hopes dashed again that bond money will be issued for the project which has been an economic development and health concern of long standing. The board has worried about raw sewage standing in ditches in the area.
Board approves fuel-use study By SUE WATSON The Holly Springs Board of Aldermen voted August 2 to monitor fuel consumption of city vehicles after alderman Johnnie Ree Bagley Johnson presented a motion, which was withdrawn, to restrict vehicle uses going to and from home with a few exceptions. Holly Springs policemen respond to assaults, more Officers with the Holly Springs Police Department responded to 89 calls last week, according to interim chief John Norman.
