Jessie Lenora Bennem, 51, of Victoria, died Jan. 13, 2011, at Baptist Hospital in Memphis, Tenn. Services will be at 1 p.m. on Jan. 19 at Mt. Newell MB Church in Red Banks, where she was a member. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Rev. Thurman Norman will officiate. J.F. Brittenum and Son Funeral Home will be in charge of arrangements. She leaves five children, Renee Bennem, Vickie Bennem, LaKevia Bennem, Adrian Bennem, Keith Bennem, all of Victoria; five sisters, Mary Martin, Hattie Smith, both of Cayce, Dorothy Smith of Byhalia, Maudie Riley, Pinkey Bennem, both of Victoria; four brothers, Lee Russell Smith of Victoria, Albert Smith of Holly Springs, Eddie Bennem of Chicago, Ill., John Henry Bennem of Memphis; and five grandchildren. Toni Katherine Bobbitt Toni Katherine Bobbitt, 62, of the Cockrum Community and formerly of Mt. Pleasant and Fayette County, Tenn., died Jan. 14, 2011, at Germantown Methodist Hospital. She was a Baptist. Services were held at 2 p.m. on Jan. 16 at Holly Springs Funeral Home Chapel. Burial was in Carey Chapel Cemetery in Mt. Pleasant. Bro. Gary Joyner officiated. She leaves her husband, Billy F. Bobbitt; a son, Barry Lee of Olive Branch; five daughters, Pam Dixon of Oakland, Tenn., Tracy Finch of Savannah, Tenn., Donna Rhodes of Texas, Allison Faisal of Memphis, Bridgette Perry of Bartlett, Tenn.; five brothers, Charles Bud Rhodes, Harold Luke Rhodes, Leonard Dell Rhodes, Charles Eddie Rhodes, all of Mt. Pleasant, Mark Rhodes of Bartlett; a sister, Carol Gossage of Hernando; 12 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a daughter, Kimberly Wright. Pauline Churchill Mary Pauline Defer Churchill, 64, of Potts Camp, died Saturday, January 15, 2011 at her residence. She was employed as a private nurse. Lee Andrew Flemming, 65, of Potts Camp, died Jan. 9, 2011, at his home. He was a member of McIntyre MB Church and disabled. Services were held at 11 a.m. on Jan. 15 at J.F. Dean of Holly Springs; and three brothers, Clarence Hardin of Holly Springs, Charlie Hardin, Joecephus Hardin, both of Jackson. He was preceded in death by siblings Volney Hardin and Travis K. Hardin. Aubrey Jake Humphrey Aubrey Jake Humphrey, 74, of Hudsonville, died Jan. 13, 2011, in Olive Branch. He was a member of the Church of Christ and a security guard. Services were held at 2 p.m. on Jan. 17 at Holly Springs Funeral Home Chapel. Burial was in Hill Crest Cemetery. He leaves two sons, Steven Jake Humphrey, Jackie Joe Humphrey, both of Hudsonville; three daughters, Julie Ann Hatter, Carolyn Marie Watkins, both of Olive Branch, Martha Sue Sayman of Harpersville, NY; a brother, Paul Humphrey of Waterford; a sister, Minnie Theo Allen of Lamar; eight grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Jerry L. Hunt, 51, of New Albany, died Jan. 7, 2011, at his home. He joined the U.S. Army in 1979, serving approximately 25 years until retirement in 2006. Some of his accomplishments include Army E-5 Sergeant, Marksmanship Badge M-16, Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary and Army Reserve Components Achievement Medal. Services were held at 12 noon on Jan. 15 at Pleasant Grove MB Church. Rev. Larry Bridgeforth officiated. Burial was in Pleasant Grove MB Church in Red Banks. Serenity Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements. He leaves his wife, Andrea Marie Hunt; four children, Howard Hunt, D’Erica Jones, Darrean Bridgeforth and LaDarrius Bridgeforth; a brother, Wardel Hunt of Ripley; a sister, Marcella Martin of Holly Springs; and five grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a brother, Walter Hunt Jr. Pallbearers were William Carter, Bernard Norman, Shawn McDonald, Torri Jones, Sammie Payne and Sammie Parker. Columbus “Daddy Doc” James, 100, of Holly Springs, died Jan. 6, 2011 at Alliance HealthCare System. He was a retired self-employed farmer and a member of Mt. Gilead CME Church where he was a church steward. He was the widower of Maeliza Jones James. Services were held at 1 p.m. on Jan. 14 at Chulahoma MB Church. Rev. Charles Richmond officiated. J.F. Brittenum and Son Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements. He leaves two sons, Willie James of Holly Springs and Arthur James of Milwaukee, Wis.; five daughters, Mae Lucy James, Arlean Clark and Willean Henderson, all of Milwaukee, Wisc., Evelyn Jones and Verlene Hibler, both of Holly Springs. He was preceded in death by one son, Johnny Jones; and his siblings Annie Pearl Cole, Lucy Cox, Truly Hardin, Mary Harmon, Amanda Pryor, Jessie James, Isaac James, and Tobie James Jr.
Charlene H. Lane, 68, died Dec. 7, 2010. She was the widow of George Lane and a minister of Mt. Vernon Baptist Church. Services were held at 11 a.m. on Dec. 18 at Mt. Vernon Baptist Church. Burial was in New Park Cemetery in Memphis, Tenn. Dr. James L. Netters, senior pastor, officiated. M.J. Edwards Funeral Homes of Memphis was in charge of arrangements. She leaves her son, Darryl Cooley of Columbia, S.C.; five sisters, Ernestine Hamilton of Waterford, Yolande Bunting, Nelthia Hinton, Salillia Phillips, Deirdre Chaney, all of Memphis, Tenn.; two brothers, Mose Hamilton of Chicago, Ill., Thomas Bunting of Memphis; a stepbrother, Orlanda Carridine of Conway, Ark.; and one grandson. Pallbearers were Thomas Bunting, Alonzo Bunting, Damon Hintin, Reginald Hintin, Angelo Bunting and Wayne Hurbert. Honorary pallbearers were Napoleon Chaney, Derrick Chaney, Matthew Chaney, JC Payne, Merte Bunting, Rickey Phillips and Don Shaw.
Mattie Lee Johnson Lucas, 90, of Holly Springs, died Jan. 11, 2011, at Baptist Hospital-DeSoto in Southaven. She was a member of the Mother Board at her church and a homemaker. Services were held at 12 noon on Jan. 17 at Pleasant Grove MB Church, where she was a member. Burial was in the church cemetery. Rev. S.A. Phillips officiated. J.F. Brittenum and Son Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements. She leaves her husband, Willie Lucas Sr.; three daughters, Annie O. Hardaway of Chicago, Ill., Virginia LaSenby of Bolingbrook, Ill., Patricia Lucas of Holly Springs; five sons, John Lucas of Holly Springs, Vaccaro Bell Sr., Willie Lucas Jr. of Maywood, Ill., Luquinton Lucas of Huntsville, Ala., Wilfred Lucas of Dallas, Tx.; 32 grandchildren, 67 great-grandchildren and 34 great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by sons Strauther Bell Jr. and Willie Lee Bell Sr.
Earnest Phillips, 59, of Byhalia, died Jan. 9, 2011, at his home. He was a church deacon, assistant Sunday school superintendent, a member of the church choir and a factory worker with G.F. Marketing, Inc. Services were held at 11 a.m. on Jan. 15 at Union Valley MB Church in Byhalia, where he was a member. Burial was in the church cemetery. Rev. Joe Richmond officiated. J.F. He leaves his mother, Cleore Sanderson Phillips of Byhalia; six sisters, Bernell Nailor of Memphis, Tenn., Juanita Street, Maxine McClarty, Martha Phillips, Carol Lawson, Mary E. Tunstall, all of Byhalia; and two brothers, M.L. Phillips of Byhalia, Robert Phillips of Aurora, Ill. He was preceded in death by siblings Ruffus Phillips Jr., Vanella Hawk, Cleave Mae Eason, Willie B. Phillips and Annie Seal Richmond. Mary Ann Helt Reed Mary Ann Helt Reed, 59, of Olive Branch, died Jan. 8, 2011. She was the widow of John “J.R.” Reed, a member of First Baptist of Olive Branch and employee of Fitzgerald’s Casino. Services were held at 2 p.m. on Jan. 13 at Holly Springs Funeral Home Chapel. Burial was in Hill Crest Cemetery. She leaves her father, Thomas Harriel Helt of Germantown, Tenn.; seven daughters, Leslie Chung of Walls, Traci Vallery of Senoia, Ga., Barbara Riley of Olive Branch, Christy Reed of Memphis, Tenn., Vicki Pasco of Southaven, Tracy Reed of Norcross, Ga., Angela Colucci of Falkner; a son, Chris Colucci of Walnut; two sisters, Janet Taylor of Germantown, Betty Hutchinson of Arlington, Tenn.; and eight grandchildren.
