Memphis Street has resulted in the arrest of a suspect, the brother of
one of the victims, according to police chief Robert Pearson. He said he thinks the two murders in Holly Springs occurred between 10 p.m. and 10:50 p.m. The
victims, Octavia Crumb, 24, and her fiance Darrell Finley, 28, both of
150 North Memphis Street, were dead on the scene when police arrived. Full Story

An
estimated group of 350 turned out Monday for the 26th annual Marshall
County celebration of Martin Luther King Jr.’s birthday. Nationally,
the day was set by Congress 25 years ago, but members of the Marshall
County Chapter of the National Association for the Advancement of
Colored People began a year earlier, putting this county ahead of the
curve. That significance was noted by several speakers at the breakfast
and program held this year at the Eddie Lee Smith Jr. Multi-Purpose

Farmers market on go By SUE WATSON Staff Writer Anyone
who has a green thumb and wants to put it to use this year to help
support a farmers market on the square in downtown Holly Springs needs
to get their planting dates set. The Holly
Springs Main Street Association is sponsoring the Holly Springs Farmers
Market beginning Saturday, May 7. It will continue each Saturday
through October 29, according to committee president Gary Adams. Full Story

board of aldermen of the city of Holly Springs has voted to offer
direct deposit to its employees, but the process is being debated by

MA graduate to compete for state crown By BARRY BURLESON Editor Ashley Forester recalls going to her grandmother’s house as a little girl so she could watch the Miss Mississippi pageant. “We couldn’t get that channel on our TV,” she said. The 21-year-old from Holly Springs won’t have to worry about seeing it on television this time around. She will be a contestant. Full Story
Road closings announced Waites Road in the
Byhalia area is closed at the intersection of the railroad track while
track repairs are taking place January 20 and 21, according to Larry
Hall, county road and bridge manager. Supervisors
voted to close Callicutt Road south of Waterford Tuesday while two
bridges await replacement. Bids were opened at Tuesday’s meeting and
work orders should proceed soon to replace the two bridges.
Caldwell, Tagert in runoff; Ray Minor carries county John
Caldwell and Mike Tagert are advancing to a Tuesday, Feb. 1, runoff for
Northern District transportation commissioner. They each received 21
percent of the vote in a seven-man race. Full Story
