Obituaries
William Calvin Akins, 85, of Ripley, died July 11, 2011, in Holly Springs. He was the widower of Helen Margaret Coker and Katherine H. Fisher. He earned his baccalaureate degree in vocal music from Southwestern at Memphis (Rhodes) and master’s degree from Columbia University, NYC. A tenor soloist specializing in oratorio, opera and liturgical music, he was a retired music teacher in NY and Memphis schools. Graveside services were held at 3 p.m. on July 14 at Hill Crest Cemetery. Holly Springs Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements. Danny O’Neil Darnell Sr., 62, of Holly Springs, died July 5, 2011, at his home. He was a member of Liberty Missionary Baptist Church of Olive Branch, a heating and air repairman and a veteran. Services were held at 2 p.m. on July 8 at Holly Springs Funeral Home Chapel. Bro. Billy Adair officiated. He leaves his wife, Rebecca Sue Darnell; a son, Danny O’Neil Darnell Jr. (Laura) of Potts Camp; three daughters, Dana Watkins (Richard Dyer), Melissa Darnell (Paul Anderson), both of Red Banks, Nicole Siler (Ronnie) of Holly Springs; a brother, Bill Darnell of Buffalo, NY; two sisters, Teresa Bobbitt of Mt. Paul Johnson Gray Sr. Paul Johnson Gray Sr., 71, of Collierville, Tenn., died July 17, 2011, at Baptist Hospital in Collierville. He was a member of Rice Chapel Methodist Church, a painter and a National Guard veteran. Services were held at 2 p.m. on July 19 at Holly Springs Funeral Home Chapel. Bro. Adam Vinson officiated. Burial was in Rice Chapel Cemetery. He leaves his wife, Sarah K. Gray; two sons, Paul Gray Jr. (Vickie) of Ashland, Chris Gray (Malena) of Holly Springs; a daughter-in-law, Melisha Gray (widow of the late Rodney Gray); two sisters, Opal Grisham, Joyce Rochelle, both of Slayden; and seven grandchildren. Mervin Lewis Jones Mervin Lewis Jones, 51, of North Miami Beach, Fla., formerly of Holly Springs, died June 25, 2011, at his home. He was a U.S. Army veteran and a security guard. Services were held at 11 a.m. on July 23 at J.F. Brittenum Funeral Chapel, where he was a member. Burial was in the church cemetery. Rev. R.J. Wilson officiated. J.F. He leaves a son, Maceo Antron Jones of Miami, Fla.; a daughter, Tasha Jones of Memphis; his mother, Mae Frances Jones of Memphis, Tenn.; four sisters, Sherry J. Miller of Louisville, Ky., Mamie Jean Jeffries of Holly Springs, Frances Lee Cox of Memphis, Glinnie M. Collins of Potts Camp; five brothers, James L. Jones, Royster Jones Jr. of Memphis, Kerry D. Jones of Las Vegas, Nev., Eddie S. Jones, Thomas Earl Jones of Memphis; and two grandchildren.
Robert W. Pearson Robert W. Pearson, 63, of Holly Springs, died July 17, 2011 as a result of injuries sustained in a motorcycle accident. He had retired as Holly Springs police chief on June 30, 2011. He was a member of Asbury United Methodist Church and served in the U.S. Marine Corp. Family hour will be from 6-7 p.m. July 21 at J.F. Brittenum and Son Funeral Home. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. on July 22 at Rust College in the Doxey Auditorium. Rev. Ed Moses will officiate. Burial will be in Jackson, Mich. J.F. Brittenum and Son Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. He leaves his wife, Phyllis Pearson; two sons, Jason Pearson of Las Vegas, Nev., Troy Humes of Milwaukee, Wis.; his mother, Josephine T. Pearson of Saginaw, Mich.; three brothers, Ivan O. Pearson Jr. (Yolanda) of Dallas, Texas, Clarence E. Pearson Sr. (Cynthia) of Sheveport, La., John E. Pearson Sr. (Monica) of Atlanta, Ga.; a sister, Linda P. Smith (Roy); and several grandchildren.
Rhonie Lenell Royston, 62, of Potts Camp, died July 16, 2011, at his home. He was a retired construction worker. Services were held on July 20 at Royston Chapel CME Church, where he was a member. Burial was in the church cemetery. Rev. Patrick Washington officiated. J.F. Brittenum and Son Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements. He leaves his mother, Alice Boga Royston of Benton County; his children and siblings.
Thearchie Stephen, 66, of Slayden, died July 14, 2011, at Baptist Hospital in Collierville, Tenn. He was a retired core repairman with Carrier UTC in Collierville and a member of United Steel Workers Union. Services were held at 11 am. on July 23 at Hudsonville CME Church in Hudsonville, where he was a member. Burial was in the church cemetery. Rev. Bobby Wilson officiated. J.F. Brittenum and Son Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements. He leaves his wife, Fannie Jones Stephen; five sons, Charles R. Brown of Memphis, Theodoric Stephen, Michael Stephen, Orlando Stephen, all of Slayden, Lorenzo Stephen of Mt. Pleasant; 11 sisters, Tinnie Kones, Eliza Anderson, Roberda Turner, Sarah Waller, Mary Owens, Earlean Isom, all of Memphis, Arlean Luellen, Annie Jackson, Linda Moore, all of Slayden, Gracie Seldon of Red Banks, Lavern McKinnie of Rossville, Tenn.; four brothers, Charles Stephen of Holly Springs, Archie Lee Stephen of Memphis, Jessie Stephen of Byhalia, Kevin Stephen of Olive Branch; 18 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.
Jessie Lee Tunstall, 39, of Byhalia, died July 16, 2011 at the Regional Medical Center in Memphis, Tenn. Visitation will be at the funeral home July 20, from 2-6 p.m. and at the church on July 21 from 10-10:55 a.m. Services will be held at 11 a.m. on July 21 at Miracle Temple COGIC in Victoria, where he was a member. Burial will be in Taylor Chapel United Methodist Church Cemetery. Rev. Joe Tunstall will officiate. J.F. Brittenum and Son Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. He leaves his mother, Jannie Mae Malone Tunstall of Byhalia; six sisters, Brenda K. Stewart of Gray’s Lake, Ill., Patricia A. Duckworth of Beach Park, Ill., Arlene Norman of Waukegan, Ill., Jacqueline Sharp of Memphis, Annette T. Tate of Byhalia, Debra A. Osborne of Zion, Ill.; four brothers, Donzell D. Tunstall of Byhalia, Irwin Tunstall, Lavon Tunstall, Tony A. Tunstall, all of Byhalia. He was preceded in death by his father, Donzell Tunstall and siblings, Michelle Tunstall, Theresa M. Tunstall and Orlando Kilpatrick, Jr.
Earl Young, 64, of Memphis, Tenn., died July 13, 2011, at his home in Holly Springs. He was a factory worker with Carrier, Inc., Collierville, Tenn. Services were held at 12 noon on July 16 at Concord MB Church in Slayden, where he was a member. Burial was in the church cemetery. Rev. Clyde Williams officiated. J.F. Brittenum and Son Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements. He leaves his wife, Bernice Craft Young; a daughter, Nicole Young of Memphis; two sons, Cedric Young, Wendell Young, both of Memphis, a stepson, Keith Craft of Memphis; five sisters, Frances Young, Mable Anderson, both of Holly Springs, Willie Briggs, Melinda Anderson, Josephine Bryant, all of Memphis; five brothers, Lee Eddie Young, John Lee Young, Lee Roy Young, Odell Young, Floyd Lee Young, all of Memphis; nine grandchildren and one great-grandchild. |
