William Calvin Akins
William
Calvin Akins, 85,
of Ripley, died July 11, 2011, in Holly Springs. He was the widower of
Helen Margaret Coker and Katherine H. Fisher. He earned his
baccalaureate degree in vocal music from Southwestern at Memphis
(Rhodes) and master’s degree from Columbia University, NYC. A tenor
soloist specializing in oratorio, opera and liturgical music, he was a
retired music teacher in NY and Memphis schools.
Graveside
services were held at 3 p.m. on July 14 at Hill Crest Cemetery. Holly
Springs Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
He
leaves two children, Elizabeth Akins Pritchard of Germantown, Tenn.,
and William David Akins of Long Island, NY.

Danny
O’Neil Darnell Sr., 62, of Holly Springs, died July 5, 2011, at his
home. He was a member of Liberty Missionary Baptist Church of Olive
Branch, a heating and air repairman and a veteran.
Services
were held at 2 p.m. on July 8 at Holly Springs Funeral Home Chapel.

He
leaves his wife, Rebecca Sue Darnell; a son, Danny O’Neil Darnell Jr.
(Laura) of Potts Camp; three daughters, Dana Watkins (Richard Dyer),
Melissa Darnell (Paul Anderson), both of Red Banks, Nicole Siler
(Ronnie) of Holly Springs; a brother, Bill Darnell of Buffalo, NY; two
sisters, Teresa Bobbitt of Mt. Pleasant, Vanessa Shepherd of Eads,
Tenn.; 19 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Paul
Johnson Gray Sr., 71, of Collierville, Tenn., died July 17, 2011, at
Baptist Hospital in Collierville. He was a member of Rice Chapel
Methodist Church, a painter and a National Guard veteran.
Services
were held at 2 p.m. on July 19 at Holly Springs Funeral Home Chapel.
Bro. Adam Vinson officiated. Burial was in Rice Chapel Cemetery.
He
leaves his wife, Sarah K. Gray; two sons, Paul Gray Jr. (Vickie) of
Ashland, Chris Gray (Malena) of Holly Springs; a daughter-in-law,
Melisha Gray (widow of the late Rodney Gray); two sisters, Opal
Grisham, Joyce Rochelle, both of Slayden; and seven grandchildren.
He
was preceded in death by a son, Rodney Gray.

Mervin
Lewis Jones, 51, of North Miami Beach, Fla., formerly of Holly Springs,
died June 25, 2011, at his home. He was a U.S. Army veteran and a
security guard.
Services
were held at 11 a.m. on
July 23 at J.F. Brittenum Funeral Chapel, where he was a member. Burial
was in the church cemetery. Rev. R.J. Wilson officiated. J.F. Brittenum

Robert
W. Pearson, 63, of Holly Springs, died July 17, 2011 as a
result of
injuries sustained in a motorcycle accident. He had retired as Holly
Springs police chief on June 30, 2011. He was a member of Asbury United
Methodist Church and served in the U.S. Marine Corp.
Family
hour will be from 6-7 p.m. July 21 at J.F. Brittenum and Son Funeral
Home. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. on July 22 at Rust
College in the Doxey Auditorium. Rev. Ed Moses will officiate. Burial
will be in Jackson, Mich. J.F. Brittenum and Son Funeral Home is in
charge of arrangements.

was a retired construction worker.

Stephen, 66, of Slayden, died July 14, 2011, at Baptist Hospital in
Collierville, Tenn. He was a retired core repairman with Carrier UTC in
Collierville and a member of United Steel Workers Union.

were held at 11 am. on July 23 at Hudsonville CME Church in
Hudsonville, where he was a member. Burial was in the church cemetery.

was preceded in death by his father, Donzell Tunstall and siblings,

Springs. He was a factory worker with Carrier, Inc., Collierville,
Tenn.
