News BriefsAbsentee voting available in county The
Marshall County Circuit Clerk’s office will be open the next two
Saturdays from 8 a.m. to 12 noon to give absentee voters an extra
opportunity to vote, according to circuit clerk Lucy Carpenter. People
may come in during regular office hours during the week or on Saturday
mornings – July 23 and 30 – to file an absentee ballot, she said.
People who are unable to come to the office to vote absentee may call
the clerk’s office and request an absentee ballot be mailed to them.
All mailed out ballots must be returned by mail no later than 5 p.m.
Monday, August 1, she said. Family members may
request an absentee ballot be mailed to a loved one who is not
physically able to come in to vote absentee, to students who will be
out of the county on election day and to members of the military.
Able-bodied individuals who will not be in the county on Tuesday,
August 2, may come to the circuit clerk’s office and vote absentee in
person. Anyone using the mail-in absentee ballot
must remember to follow exact instructions, she said, including signing
across the outside flap of the mail-in envelope. Instructions for doing
so are clearly marked and stated, she said. If the signature is not
signed across the flap as shown, the ballot will not be counted. The
August primary elections are designed to let the major parties, the
Democratic and Republican parties, select their candidates whose names
will appear on the November general election ballot. Anyone
who arrives at the precincts to vote must select to vote either a
Democratic or Republican party ticket August 2 and also in the August
23 run-off elections, if there are run-offs. Once a party ballot is
selected for the August 2 primary, the voter must vote the same party
in the August 23 primary. All candidates who won their party races will have their names placed on the November general election ballot. Humane Society plans August 5 fund-raiser The

2011 - Live and Silent Auction” fund-raiser on Friday, Aug. 5. It will be held from 5:30 p.m. to 9 p.m. at the VFW in Holly Springs. Lots of great auction items will be available. Everyone is urged to attend. For tickets to the event, call 662-564-2900 or e-mail DogsnCats11@gmail.com. |
