Fire at Cargill
No
injuries were reported in an early morning fire and a mid-morning
explosion at the Cargill Animal Nutrition facility in Byhalia, Friday,
July 15, according to Byhalia Fire Chief Leland Reed. The cause of the
fire and explosion are under investigation by Cargill, he said.
Firefighters responded to a fire call to the plant between 7 a.m. and 8
a.m., then to a second call of an explosion at about 10:45 a.m., Reed
said. Firefighters put out fires and extinguished hot spots in
below-grade and above-grade sections of the plant, he said. Two trucks
from the Byhalia Fire Department and one truck from the Holly Springs
Fire Department responded, he said. The matter was settled and Reed
said he left the site at 6:38 p.m. |
Man drowns in creek Elton Hughes, 27, from the
Chulahoma area, drowned Tuesday afternoon in a swimming hole in a creek
on Beale Road, according to Maj. David Cook with the Marshall County
Sheriff’s Office. Cook said people have been
known to swim in the creek for years. Three or four members of the
Holly Springs Fire Department’s divers unit located the body about 4
p.m. Cook said Hughes was not diving off the
bridge, as some media had reported, but was in the swimming hole with
about six to eight other swimmers when he went under and did not come
back up to the surface. E-911 was alerted about
3 p.m. and first responders from the Byhalia, Holly Springs, and Watson
fire departments responded to the call, as well as officers with the
sheriff’s department and emergency management director Hugh Hollowell. |
