The
sixth annual North Mississippi Hill Country Picnic was a blast again
this year according to Facebook accounts.
There
was lots of energy put into hula hoop dances, doing the boogie and just
plain shaking a leg.
Heavy
rain Friday, June 24, probably slowed up attendance Friday night and
checking in was muddy at Foxfire Ranch on Old Oxford Road south of
Waterford. A heavy two-hour rain blew tents around a bit but the rain
moved on by 4 p.m., in time for Shannon McNally to take the stage.

Byhalia
receives grant

The
Town of Byhalia has been notified it will receive a $100,000 grant to
begin renovation of the auditorium at the old high school, now owned by
the town, according to mayor Phil Malone.
The
money is not expected to be available for the initial work until
December 1 from the Mississippi Department of Archives and History.

Utility
considers pipe plan

A
required cast-iron line replacement plan for natural gas is under
consideration by the Holly Springs Utility Department and the board of
aldermen.
A
plan to increase the monthly cost of
100 cubic feet (ccf) of natural gas to customers is being
considered –
a 10-year assessment. Construction would take place in three phases.

McDonald named
new library director

Amanda
McDonald, recently of Columbus, has taken the lead position in the
Marshall County Library System. She joined the staff June 6 and
replaces librarian Diane Schule, who retired.
McDonald
is a graduate of the University of Southern Mississippi, where she
received a bachelor’s in interior design. She earned a master’s in
library science at the University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa.

Mt. Carmel Road opens
An
official ribbon cutting was held recently for Mt. Carmel Road. The road
connects Highway 302 at the Chickasaw Trail Industrial Park with Wingo
Road where the new ASICS and Exel distribution centers are located.
Present for the big occasion were (from left) Al Beck, Terry Cook,
Larry Britt, Dot Childress, Bill Stone, Justin Hall, Kelvin Buck, Lucy
Carpenter, Mike Hamblin, George Zinn III, Phil Malone, Eddie Dixon,
Andre’ DeBerry, Victor Mendez, Keith Taylor, Larry Hall, Ronnie Joe
Bennett, Willie Flemon, Chuck Thomas and Bill Dawson. Before the
development in the industrial park on Wingo Road, Mt. Carmel Road was a
field road through agricultural land. The road was built mostly with
Congress’ American Recovery and Reinvestment Act funds. |

4; accidents, 3; burglaries, 6; funeral assistance, 2; 911 hang-up
calls, 2; welfare check, 1; stolen auto, 1; assaults, 4; medical and

Four arrested on drug-related charges By SUE WATSON Staff Writer A
Marshall County resident, two DeSoto County residents and one person
from Tunica County were arrested and charged with drug-related offenses
following an investigation spanning several months, according to

Museum activities
A glass collection owned by Harvey Payne is on display at the
Marshall County Historical Museum. Payne began collecting glass, he
said, because his wife “was kind of dragging her feet” in the hobby she
took up first, he said. “I kind of picked it up,” he said.

Gary Looney released the following report – alarm calls, 4;
miscellaneous, 14; escorts, 6; thefts, 1; disturbances, 1;
animal-related calls, 1; assists, 1; motor vehicle accidents, 1; fires,
3; and medical calls, 7. Byhalia police officers made eight arrests during the past week.
