OpinionFielder’s Choice Barbour – great leader I have a few signatures of a few famous people. None mean more to me than Gov. Haley Barbour’s autograph on the program for the Mississippi Press Association’s Education Foundation Roast from 2005. Close to Nowhere Eighty-three years! Wow! Friday, we here at The South Reporter enjoyed lunch in honor of editor and publisher Barry Burleson’s 10th year here. Barry brought different ideas to the newspaper. Former editor Walter Webb, whom we all loved, had his own style and Barbara and I especially were worried about a “new” editor. Ten years later, we’ve broken Barry in nicely. He still can’t cook, but we know his favorite foods -- seafood, homemade banana pudding and, most importantly, deviled eggs! MRAP’s role critical in Iraq, Afghanistan U.S. Senator Mississippi is playing an important role in supplying the large, heavily-armored vehicles that are responsible for safeguarding our troops from Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs). In a recent interview, Defense Secretary Robert Gates said “thousands of lives” have been saved because of the Mine Resistant Ambush Protected (MRAP) combat trucks being utilized in Iraq and Afghanistan.
