A
parachute installed just days prior to the crash of a private
single-engine, four-seater Cessna 182, piloted by Ashland attorney John
Booth Farese, is credited with saving the man’s life. Steve
Farese Sr. said there is no doubt the parachute saved his brother’s
life when John Booth’s plane lost all power and control Monday
afternoon shortly after take-off at the Holly Springs/Marshall County
Airport. He said his brother had lost all control
of the plane at an altitude of between 300-400 feet and had two seconds
to make a decision whether to deploy the parachute or not. Full Story

The
long-awaited groundbreaking for the first segment of I-269 in
Mississippi drew a large crowd of dignitaries, elected officials and
others. It was held Thursday at the corner of Mt. Carmel Road and Highway 302. When
completed, I-269 will form a 30-mile eastern bypass around Memphis
through Tennessee and Mississippi. The route will relieve congestion on
the I-69/I-55 corridor and efficiently connect I-40 and I-55 through
North Mississippi. I-40 is a major cross-country freight route, and
I-69 is being developed as an international connector from Mexico to
Canada through Mississippi. Full Story
Register to vote by July 2 By SUE WATSON Staff Writer The
last chance to register to vote in the August 2 primary elections is
noon Saturday, July 2, according to circuit clerk Lucy Carpenter. Anyone
not registered to vote in Marshall County must register by Saturday at
the circuit clerk’s office if he or she expects to vote in the party

Zoning says no to asphalt plant By SUE WATSON Staff Writer The
Marshall County zoning board said no to Stephen Jackson, a
representative of Rogers Group, who wanted to put a temporary asphalt
plant on the old Big Bird Diner lot on Highway 7 South. Jackson
and landowner Barry Thomas asked to discuss the possibility of
operating the temporary plant while the company paves U.S. 78 from the
West Exit of Holly Springs to the Benton County line. Rogers Group, a
company headquartered in Nashville, won the contract by underbidding
one contractor by $5 million and another by $2 million, Thomas said. Full Story
City of Holly Springs receives grant for safety equipment A $2,500 grant has been awarded to the City of Holly Springs for the purchase of safety equipment. The
grant was presented by the Mississippi Office of Homeland Security, on

Springs police officers responded to 98 calls last week and made one

Gary Looney released the following report – alarm calls, 7;
miscellaneous, 20; juveniles, 4; thefts, 2; assists, 2; motor vehicle
accidents, 3; fires, 1; burglaries, 1; and medical calls, 11. Byhalia police officers also made 10 arrests during the past week, according to Looney.
