OpinionFielder’s Choice Wonderful Father’s Day It was a simple Father’s Day but one of my best ever. It started with my favorite breakfast – over-easy eggs, sausage and biscuits – prepared by my wife. Close to Nowhere All the men in my life... The national media keeps on and on about “social networking.” They mean things like Twitter (I don’t ‘tweet’) and Facebook. I do Facebook! I love keeping up with family and childhood friends, etc. Pastor Doug at Crosspointe Christian Fellowship in Olive Branch, not only uses Facebook, he tweets and iTunes and has podcasts, etc. He’s even designing a new website. He enjoys all the new tech stuff! Letters To The Editor A warrior for
education
Ms. Celia Frances Underwood has been a warrior for education. She has taught for 40 years and recently retired for a second time from Holly Springs High School. Frances is like the legendary Greek hero, Achilles, who fought during the Trojan War. Achilles was told by his mother to wage war against Troy and his named would be remembered for a thousand years. Frances chose to use her extraordinary ability to give students an excellent education. She has taught U.S. history to 1877 for many years. Her students have consistently done well on the SATP State Test. Many have scored advanced. My daughter, Ashley Pryor, scored advanced and received a “Woodman of the World Award” for the highest average in U.S. history to 1877 (2010). Through the auspicious teaching of Ms. Underwood, Ashley only missed one question on the SATP state test. Ashley is thankful to have had a knowledgeable, caring and jack-of-all-trades teacher like Ms. Underwood. She not only taught children academics, but also helped them in other ways. Like Achilles, her name will be remembered for her unyielding dedication to educating the whole child. Charlene Echols Seek grants for
sirens I want to thank my alderman, Harvey Payne, for bringing up the need for storm sirens in Holly Springs at last week’s board meeting. In a May 28 article in the Desoto Appeal, Desoto County is again seeking more funding for sirens. They sought funding for 80 sirens back in 2009 from MEMA, who obtained the funds through FEMA. They received funding for 16. Where was Holly Springs when these funds became available? The Sun Herald newspaper in Biloxi has recently reported that many coastal towns are making plans to put in sirens. The paper reports that MEMA and FEMA recently offered grants to cities for siren systems. These grants require that the city or county have a 25 percent match. To the mayor, alderman and department heads, let’s do some homework to find out about these grants. Call Desoto County, or coastal towns and see what they are doing. Get a grant writer to request these funds. If you know what homework is, then it is timeto do it. By the way, as I am writing this letter, June 16, the TV stations are reporting severe storms in our area and it has become very, very dark outside. Thank
you, Hometown Heroes Please take time to remember our local “heroes” who are serving in war zones around the world.
