Obituaries Theodore Briggs
Theodore Briggs, 85, of Lamar,
died May 26, 2011, at Baptist Hospital-DeSoto. He was an Army veteran
and was retired from ICS Headstart. Services were
held at 12 noon on June 3 at Concord MB Church in Lamar. Burial was in
the church cemetery. Serenity Funeral Home was in charge of
arrangements. He leaves his wife, Cora Lee
Briggs; stepmother, Ruthie Briggs; nine children, Anita Wyatt, Brenda
Joyce Briggs, both of Byhalia, Corine McGowan of Southaven, Marilyn
Rankin, Henry Lewis Briggs and Ted Briggs, all of Memphis, Tenn.,
Theodore Briggs Jr. of Smyrna, Tenn., James Briggs of Oxford, Victor
Briggs of Lamar; a godson, Paul Bobo of Memphis; a brother, Willie
Briggs of Memphis; two sisters, Ida Mae and Helen Marie; 37
grandchildren, 38 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild. Shirley Ann Foster Shirley
Ann Foster, 69, of Byhalia, died June 3, 2011, at St. Francis Hospital
in Memphis, Tenn. She was the widow of Charles Foster, a member of
First Baptist Church of Olive Branch and employed with Carrier Corp. Services
were held at 10 a.m. on June 7 at Holly Springs Funeral Home Chapel.
Burial was in Stone Cemetery in Potts Camp. Bro. P.J. Scott and Bro.
Jimmy Wilbanks officiated. She leaves five
sons, Robert Foster of Livermore, Colo., Michael Foster of Little Rock,
Calif., Johnny Foster of Coldwater, Russell Johnson of Batesville, Mark
Johnson of Somerville, Tenn.; four daughters, Debbie Voyles of
Somerville, Eva Cook of Byhalia, Kathy Riley of Coldwater, Jeanette
Busby of Hernando; a brother, E.B. Sanders of Potts Camp; a sister,
Brenda Henderson of Potts Camp; 22 grandchildren and 14

Gandy, 83, of Potts Camp, died May 29, 2011, at Baptist Trinity Hospice
in Collierville, Tenn. She was the widow of William Russell Gandy, a
member of Temperance Hill Baptist Church and a laborer with Wurlitzer
Piano. Services were held at 11 a.m. on June 2 at
Holly Springs Funeral Home Chapel. Burial was in Chewalla Cemetery in
Potts Camp. Bro. Ken Cooper and Bro. David Gandy officiated. She
leaves two sons, David Gandy (Ann), W.R. Gandy Jr. (Beverly), both of
Potts Camp; a daughter, Teresa Dunavant (Bill) of Byhalia; a brother,
Lee Bourland of Memphis, Tenn.; seven grandchildren and eight

Ione Garner, 93, died June 2, 2011, at her home near Ripley. She was
the widow of William Hall (Bill) Garner and worked on their family farm
for more than 60 years. She was one of the oldest members of Jacob’s
Chapel Methodist Church, where she became a member on Sept. 8, 1946. Services
were held at 2 p.m. on June 5 at McBride Funeral Home Chapel in Ripley.
Burial was in Jacob’s Chapel Cemetery. Dr. Patrick Chapman and Rev.
Scott Falgout officiated. She leaves a son,
Jerry Garner (Donna) of Kossuth; three daughters, Blanche Garner
Grisham (Bobby), Bettye Garner Hill (Melvin) of Ripley, Billie Garner
Mills (Danny) of Potts Camp; two sisters, Jessie Griffin Wilson of
Madden, Virginia (Jenner) Griffin Ward of Jackson, five grandchildren
and seven great-grandchildren. She was preceded
in death by a son, Jimmy Hall Garner; a grandson, William Tandy
Grisham; a brother, Gaston Griffin; and four sisters, Wilma Griffin
Hall, Cloyce Griffin Witt, Julie Ann Griffin Hall, Mildred Griffin
McBryde. Pallbearers were Ronnie Dunnam, Harvey
Childers, Wayne Goolsby, Lannie Hopper, Austin Hopper and Andrew
Hopper. Honorary pallbearers were Kenneth Wilbanks, Ken Wilbanks,
Lenwood Garner, Bob Hall, Louise White and Maxine Jobe. Memorials

Napolean
Heath, 82, of Holly Springs, died May 28, 2011, at Baptist
Hospital-DeSoto in Southaven. He was the widower of Ethel Porter Heath.
He was a retired factory worker with Holly Springs Brick & Tile. Services
were held at 11 a.m. on June 4 at Rising Star MB Church in Holly
Springs, where he was a member. Burial was in the church cemetery. Rev.
Robert McClain officiated. J.F. Brittenum and Son Funeral Home was in
charge of arrangements. He leaves seven children,
Frances Heath-Stinson, Dorothy Bean, both of Ashland, Mary McNeil,
Frank Heath, both of Memphis, Tenn., John Heath of Holly Springs, Von
Lee Love of Drew, David McNeil of Laurel; two sisters, Annie Mae Miller
of St. Louis, Mo., Tinnie Heath of Dyersburg, Tenn.; and 18
grandchildren. He was preceded in death by siblings Robert Louis Heath and Mary Wilkins. Janet Gould Matson
Janet
Gould Matson, 69, died May 29, 2011, at her home in Morgan, Vt. She
lived most of her youth in Sycamore, Ill., and moved to Holly Springs
with her parents and brother in the early 1960s. She starred in musical
productions at the University of Mississippi. She designed and built a
house for her family and most recently completed a book. She leaves her husband of nearly 40 years, Stephen William; sons Christian Thor and Chandler William; and two grandchildren. Memorial services will be held at a later date in Morgan, Vt., and Hingham, Mass. She was preceded in death by her brother, David Lincoln Gould; and an infant sister, Jacqueline Gould. In lieu of flowers, gifts can be made to the Astra Zeneca Hope Lodge in Jamaica Plain, MA, and the Circle of Friends in Morgan. Elizabeth Diane McAlexander Elizabeth Diane McAlexander, 28, of Olive Branch, died recently at her home. She was a Jehovah’s Witness and an esthetician. Services were held at 10 a.m. on June 3 at Holly Springs Funeral Home Chapel. Burial was in Ashland Cemetery. She
leaves her mother, Sondra Blackburn (David) of Olive Branch; her
father, Sidney McAlexander (Donna) of Holly Springs; her brother,
Preston McAlexander of Holly Springs; her sister, Megan Holcomb of
Booneville; and grandparents, Sue McAlexander of Holly Springs and Lisa

were held at 1 p.m. on June 4 at Thyatira Church of Christ, Senatobia.
Burial was in Wyattes Community Church, Holly Springs. Rodgers Funeral
Home of Senatobia was in charge of arrangements. He
leaves his father, U.Z. Mosley of Senatobia; seven sisters, Annie
Mosley, Minervia King, Shirley Mosley, Jennifer Tony, all of Senatobia,
Aretha Mosley of Holly Springs, Fornia Newson of Chicago, Ill.,
Charlotte Street of Midland, Ga.; and six brothers, Bobby Mosley,
