Kimbrough continues to build a football program at H.W. Byers. Starting
in August, the construction will move to a new level. The
Lions will enter district competition as a member of Region 1-1A.
Football was renewed at the school just three years ago at the junior
high level and Byers played an independent varsity slate last year. Full Story

Alexander shines at Southwest By BARRY BURLESON Editor Lauren Alexander left an impressive mark on the Southwest Tennessee Community College softball program. The
2009 graduate of Marshall Academy finished her two-year stint at
Southwest by becoming the all-time hit leader at the junior college.
She had 54 hits as a freshman and 63 as a sophomore. Full Story

will be a bit of déjà vu in the NBA championship series this season.
About five years ago the stage was set in the same way. The Miami Heat
would face the Dallas Mavericks in the showdown seven. Dallas
faced down a very brash and tough, talented opponent in the Oklahoma
City Thunder. Dallas had a clockbuster (121-112) win in game one and
the Thunder returned the favor in game two with a clockbuster (106-100)
of their own, but the home court advantage favored the Mavericks too
well. The death knell sounded for the Thunder in game four on Monday
when the Mavs wiped away a 15-point deficit, forced the fifth frame and

MA hosts camp June 13-15 Marshall Academy will host a football camp June 13-16 for second through seventh graders. The camp will be led by new head coach Barrett Donahoe and other members of his staff. It will focus on fundamentals. The cost of the camp, which begins at 8:30 a.m., is $60 per child. Checks
should be made payable to Marshall Academy. Pre-registration is
available in the school office, which is open Monday through Thursday
from 9 a.m. to noon. Participants can also register the first day of
the camp, Monday, June 13. For more information, call Marshall Academy, 662-252-3449.

H.W. Byers Lady Lady Lions claimed their third state basketball
championships in four years this past season. After each state crown,
The South Reporter has presented the school a huge team photograph to

 | Northeast recognizes out-of-district athletes
Northeast
Mississippi Community College capped its 2010-11 athletic year with its
annual all sports awards ceremony on Monday, May 2, in the Black and
Gold Room inside the Haney Union on the Booneville campus. Athletes
from each of Northeast’s nine sports plus student athletic trainers
were honored for the time and dedication that each had put forth to
make Northeast athletics a success. Athletes from outside Northeast’s
five-county district (Alcorn, Prentiss, Tippah, Tishomingo and Union)
but from the state of Mississippi included Emily Burk of Holly Springs,
team captain women’s tennis; Tiffany Martin of Olive Branch, most
assists women’s basketball; Tyler Reed of Hickory Flat, Tiger Award
men’s basketball; Nick Tate of Holly Springs, team captain men’s
basketball, best defensive player men’s basketball; Kelle West of
Hamilton, team captain softball, most valuable pitcher softball; Robin
Franks of Hernando, good morning chisel award softball, David Carnell
six-inch award softball; and Katie Beth Dahlem of Hamilton, most
valuable offensive player softball. |
