Holly Springs’ Alan Thompson named Trooper of the Year
Holly Springs resident Alan Thompson has been named the Mississippi Highway Patrol’s Trooper of the Year for 2000. A master sergeant with the Highway Patrol, Thompson said it is a very great honor and very humbling. He also received Investigator of the Year.
Oops! Phone book missing last page of Holly Springs numbers
The bright, crisp new phone books, recently arrived in Holly Springs have a “small” flaw. The residential listings stopped with Doris Wilson -- leaving out the rest of the W’s, and the X’s, Y’s and Zs.

Sheriff Osborne Bell killed making arrest
A special grand jury returned an indictment for capitol murder Monday against Bart Mease, 22, of Riverdale, Ga., in the shooting death of Marshall County Sheriff Osborne Bell, during a drug arrest. The sheriff was attempting to handcuff Mease when a scuffle broke out. Deputy Walter Bell attempted to assist in subduing Mease but was unable to before Sheriff Bell was shot in the neck.
Parker Bell accepts sheriff position
Parker Bell, the 74-year-old father of slain Sheriff Osborne Bell, has accepted the appointment by the board of supervisors as Marshall County’s interim sheriff.
50 Years Ago - May 25, 1961
To Girls’ State
Kay Thompson, daughter of Mrs. Ben Thompson, and Faith Winter, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. T.O. Winter, will leave June 9 to attend Girls’ State in Jackson. Both are juniors at Holly Springs High School this year.
Hugh H. Rather begins construction on office building
Hugh H. Rather, architect, began construction on a new modern office building, located on Alderson Street, one block from the square. The structure will be very modern in design, in keeping with the progress of the space age. It will be the most modern architure in the state. It will be air conditioned throughout and be lighted with fluorescent fixtures. Nearly all labor and material will come from Marshall County and north Mississippi.
